Not sure about other areas of the country but the Carolina's are baking with high heat and no rain for the last few weeks . . . . even sites in the woods (loaded with ticks and copperheads as I found out Friday afternoon) are rock hard when you try to dig . . . . .
Went out today to try and find a few areas I could dig without fear of killing the grass and came across a site where some houses had been removed . . . . . OK, at least I could dig (or so I thought). Pulled a few wheats and a pair of Mercury dimes and got a blister trying to recover them from the rock-hard ground.
Got a good signal showing 8"+ and what a chore trying to get to it with my digger . . . . wished I had a pick but I had left it in the other car from the relic hunting trip Friday. OK, as I was dying in the heat and struggling to get to the traget, I was chiseling the ground with the digger . . . Grabbing a handful of "dust dirt" and running the Pro Pointer through it in my hand, I finally got it out . . . . and as I felt the dirt, I could see it was a large coin . . . . and as I saw the front, I could see the outline and knew it was a King George copper . . . . . OK, the front looked good but as I flipped it over, I saw that the digger had kissed the coin not once, not twice but three times! Not gouged but clearly three marks that were not 200+ years old! Funny how you never hit that clad quarter or zinc penny no?
Overall had a great hunt but I think I need to hold off until we get some rain to do any serious hunting on land . . . . that rack of filled scuba tanks looked real inviting when I got home so I might just be scanning some real estate under 30 feet of water the rest of this week.
How is everyone else doing with the heat / no rain situation?
