Here's what Numismatic Conservation Services ( NCG) did to a nice 1877 Indian !!! Conservation my butt!! It looks like they dropped it in acid and forgot about it !! A kid with a pocket knife can do a better job !! They totally destroyed a find of a lifetime !! NGC and NCS is terrible!! If I would of sent it in to NGC without the SO CALLED CONSERVATION at least It would of been encapsulated... Better to do it yourself then let these morons do it !!!

UNBELIEVABLE!!! I guess they thought that nice slick patina was a bad thing??? thats crazy and a shame!

What a shame.

thought id add this link showing the coin right after coming out of the ground just rinsed off

That is a very revolting development to say the least.I have to wonder what is wrong with NCS as that is a case of total incompetence:thumbdown:

WoW ! my goodness, shame on them.

Maybe it isn't the coin you sent in? Maybe there was a mix up?

Doubtful, thats exactly what indians look like when you remove the patina. The patina IS corrosion, and to remove it reveals the pitting underneath.

Sorry to about your loss. It trully is a shame.

If you insured it when you had it sent in, you may have some recourse.......

in part......

5. Company will use reasonable care with respect to items submitted to it for Services. However, in the event that Company determines that an item was lost or damaged while in Company

Those three rim nicks on the obverse upper photo appear to be absent from the lower photo.

Also, stick with NGC or PCGS ....just sayin'.

This is a ground find with underlying corrosion!

YOU CAN'T CONSERVE A BURIED COPPER AND EXPECT ANYTHING BETTER!

The surface is gone. You remove the corrosion, which is a variable based the the chemistry of the ground and the alloying of the planchet, and that's what you get.

Your expectations are WAY TOO HIGH.

You have no recourse.

I was thinking (and hoping) the same thing. But on the reverse, the little ding on the letter C in CENT appears to be the same in both pics. It is indeed an unfortunate circumstance. But one that we can all learn from. And as hurtful as it must be, I'm glad he made the post for us all to see what happens when "professional services" are rendered by NCS. HH Randy

You're probably correct. Patina is corrosion, as stated on the coppers I've sent to be graded (but not cleaned). Unfortunately, we don't always anticipate what is under that patina. If we did, we'd leave them all green. JMHO HH Randy

Patina is what you find on a nice, original copper.

What you dig out of the ground is not 'patina'.

From my collection... this is patina:

go-rebels , anyone with a knowledge of copper bronze coins knows not to remove the verdigris (corrosion) !!! Electrolysis or chemical stripping to remove it to bare metal IS NOT Conservation!!! If you ever need a coin conserved send it to me and I'll drop it in some tole it bowl cleaner charge you $30 and send it back to you!! With verdigris you NEUTRALIZE IT NOT REMOVE!!!

NCS did a fine job for me, but I also would not have sent them the glossy green coin shown in the photos. As a rule, it doesn't get better than that... only worse. What did you expect them to do to it? Did you crack it out of the slab? I would have liked to have seen a picture of the coin in their slab.

he obviously doesn't know better and came here for advice.
Your whole, "What's the matter with you People???" is uncalled for and really doesn't help him out, he already f'd up and already feels like crap for it.
Cripes chill down there ramjet.
