Double Nickels Hide Double Barbers

Today I hunted an old lodge circa 1910. I have hunted this area many times in the past so I decided to use the F75 in Motion All Metal with Sensitivity set at 87. After about 2 hours without digging any coins, I came across a signal that was bouncing between 31 and 34 and pinpointed at 9 inches. Hoping for a nice deep nickel I decided to dig. After cutting a 7 inch plug I used my pinpointer in the hole and it vibrated on a target that was down about 2 more inches. I again scooped it out with my digger. Expecting to see a nickel, out popped a 1915-D Wheat Penny. I scanned the hole again with the F75 and it showed a reading of 32-37. At this point I switched over to the Disc. side that had settings of Disc. 5,Sensitivity 75 with 3 Tones in DE Process. With the Disc. giving mostly low tones and numbers between 30 and 42, I normally would not dig this type of Disc. reading. I then switched back over to All Metal side and after I moved the dirt around with my hand I seen two nickels at the bottom of the hole. After recovering the nickels, a check with the pinpointer showed more targets in the hole. Running the coil over the hole NOW gave a solid 78-82 reading. One more scoop with the digger and two more Wheats and the two Barber Dimes were seen scattered in the bottom of the hole at a measured 9 inches. With the Wheats being a green color combined with the two nickels being above the silver dimes, the F75 could not read the silver coins until the nickels were removed. I am sure the 9 inch depth also played a role in this. "IF" I had been hunting in Disc. with the 3H Tones I might of had a chance of digging this target....Thanks for looking

That's a pretty good hole, for sure. Multi denomination coins spills are the toughest targets to decipher. Deep nickels in particular seldom read in the nickel range. Good digging. HH jim tn

Very nice finds. I love to see the "18" as the 2 first digits of the coin date. So much history in those small round pieces.

That's some good detecting right there, most everybody would miss that spill. There's probably been hundreds of coils pass right over that target and missed it.

Great finds!

Great post, useful info AND CONGRATS on the coins!!! That's a thrill to dig
