dug lots of nails today??

Hi all, Got out yesterday and today for a couple short hunts at a local small church. Yesterday I dug a few wheats and some clad. Today I went back and dug another wheat and a zincoln. I was having a major problem digging nails today. The nails came in as good targets for the most part. I rechecked my holes to make sure they were not masking a good target but nothing. I had one that was a beautifully repeatable signal and read 11-44 12-44 but was nothing but a nail. I had some that would jump from 11,12-40's down to 9- 30's and occasionally in the 20's-40's. I guess I haven't notice nails doing this before(sounding good with good numbers) but maybe I just had a brain fart today. Also there was hardly any threshold today it was nulling alot to the point I thought something was wrong but When I got home in my yard it was normal in non trash environment Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hey Dan, I was running in conductive. I only had about a hour and a half to hunt so I did'nt change much but, I plan on going back and playing with the settings (ferrous). I am impressed on how smooth the e-trac will run around power lines though.

go over it again in ferrous, if you have no threshold or very little you need to be hunting with ferrous 2 tone, also did you turn 90 degrees over these targets and still get a get coin signal? I can almost bet you didn't.

I dig very little nails and even while at old iron infested sites. The times I do dig nails is when I am chasing extremely iffy signals that only hit one way and I almost KNOW it is going to be a deep nail but I try and dig it anyhow just trying to prove myself wrong. But normally if I get a 12-40 in two tone ferrous I will run the coil over it again and again, watch the numbers closely if every 4th or 5th pass it reads
01-37 or 01-38 it is a nail everytime even though the other times it reads 12-40. Now if I turn 90 degrees I get nothing but the 01-37. I know better and should pass these signals up, but I am stubborn and dig em...lol. I just like to prove to myself there isn't something good down there.

Goes4ever, That is the wierd thing on the one that was a good sounding signal and good numbers I did check both ways and still got decent signal. Thats where I started to shake my head because I thought for sure I had a nice deep target. I did not check them all in both directions.

The E-Trac is a killer machine for pulling silver mixed with iron. The downside is that it is a littler easier to be fooled by nails. It will often give a high-quality, repeatable signal at the point of the nail. Yes, there will be the iron null beside it, but this is the same response you get from a coin next to or mixed with iron. You have to make a choice to dig it, or pass it up. I prefer to dig ALL repeatable signals as long as it pinpoints where it hits in disc mode.

and if you flip it into 2 tone ferrous, you will not get the null and can make a much more informed decision on wether to dig or keep walking

Hey guys, I went back to the church site with a buddy and his xlt and niether one of us could get much of a threshold at all. I looked at a old map and there used to be a school there so I'm thinking they tore it down a burried alot of it. I used two tone ferrous and managed to pull some clad and some wheats. After that we went to a old school house and I played with two tone ferrous. I got a signal and my buddy scanned the hole with his xlt and could not pick up anything but iron. I pulled out a old badge from that hole that read junior legion on it. I will play with that more.

u see two tone ferrous is a valuable tool to keep in your detecting arsenal, keep using it at these type of iron infested sites and u will get better at it!

I always push the quickmask button and check it in all metal. It's automatic now to go to quickmask if it does not sound like a coin. Coins have their own special sound. The nails will pinpoint different from a mentally marked spot on the ground also just about every time.
