Dug My All Time Oldest Coin Today - 1828 !

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I went to the local Sawmill today to pick up a load of sawdust for our livestock - but the mill was closed for lunch. Since the weather's warmed up - I've started carrying the E-Trac with me more often - just in case I see a place to hunt. Good thing I had the ET with me today because I remembered seeing an old abandoned farm house last winter - only a few miles from the Mill.

After hunting around the old house for a few minutes - I noticed older holes from some one else that had hunted the location - along the walk ways, driveway, etc. I figured since this guy already hit all of the obvious places - I decided to start hunting "off the beaten path". After about ten minutes of swinging in the middle of the lawn - I got a nice 12-47 hit - but I kept loosing it.
There must have been at least four or five junk targets and the "12-47 " inside a one foot in diameter circle. Couldn't use the ET's Pin Pointer with all the junk - did the "wobble" to zero in - dug a big plug - down 6" to 7" - dead center in the middle of the hole - a Large Cent - dated 1828 !

This is the oldest coin I've found yet and the fourth Large Cent I've dug so far - the others are dated ... 1846 - 1848 and 1849.
The coin's soaking in Olive Oil now - it will probably be in the oil for a week or so - I'll post a few photo's when I get it cleaned up !

Great job Mark!!!!!!!! The Large cents are awesome to find and they sound just soooo sweet with the E-Trac! My Matrons always hit a solid 12-46.What did yours come in at and what depth?

I guess I better post some photo's of this coin before you guy's hunt me down and hang me from the nearest tree ! :surrender:

I was lucky to be able to read the date on this coin - it's pretty dirty - to play it safe - I want to give it a good week in the olive oil before I try to clean it !

Hey Jason, Yes - come to think of it - this coin was more of a 12-46 than a 12-47 - but there was a lot of target ID bounce because of the all of junk targets around it.
Like the man says - if you think there's a good target mixed in with the junk - just dig it !

The 1813 Classic I dug on Sunday was @ 2-2.5 inches with nothing around it in the woods... and it was 12/46 in all directions... solid...
