E-Trac Coils

Can anyone tell me if the SEF 10x12 coil is any better than the 11" pro coil that comes with the E-Trac?

I just got the 10x12 SEF a couple of days ago and have yet to get it in the field but I did try it in my test garden. It hit much harder on my test garden coins and so far has been the only one to correctly identify my coin garden nickle.

I can tell you that the 15x12 is much better than the stock coil. I ordered an 8x6 simply because I already have that size in the Pro Coil. Maybe some day I'll sell my Pro Coil and get the SEF 12 x10.

After reading every post I could find on this subject ( also read the posts in the Minelab Explorer Forum ) - it looks like approx. 8 out of 10 people that have a SEF 10 x 12 coil like it better than the stock Pro Coil.

Some see no difference in performance - but most seem to think that the SEF 10 x 12 gives better target ID, pin points better and maybe even goes a little deeper.

The Pro Coil weighs about 19 0z. - the SEF 10 x 12 weighs 23 oz. - you can feel the extra four ounces because it's out on the tip.
A lot of user's are finding very deep targets with the SEF 12 x 15 coils - but they are heavy - in the 29 to 30 oz. range.

To get a a feel for what these heavier coils would feel like on my machine - I found some pieces of metal ( sockets - a C- clamp, etc.) that would add the same amount of weight as each of these coils. I put the metal objects as close to the center of the Pro Coil as possible.

After a 2 1/2 month back order delay I finally got my SEF 10 x 12 about 45 days ago - I like it - it has a nice solid feel to it - a taller coil cover so less dirt gets in and I think it just might perform a little better than the stock coil.

Just my opinion - good luck ! ---Mark

HI reslate,
I predominately use the SEF 10x12 and I also use a 14 inch Excellorator (similar to the WOT) coil about 20% of the time. I use them on site specific areas and very rarely on the same site, but have on occasion. The Pro coil is a great coil so I am not going to say anything bad about it as lots of folks will tell you it's plusses. The SEF 10x12 I would not part with and intend to get one more smaller SEF after I sell my Pro coil ( it is in the fourm classifieds as we speak) I had used the SEF with an older EX II and it was such a difference for me from the EX's 10.5 that I immediatly fell in love with it. Very stable and sensitive and seperates well with my Minlab's. Plus it looks cool.
I specifically like the oval shape for the areas I hunt in as it swings between things a bit easyer as well as feels more like a vacume cleaner than the round. The look was very wicked and that cought my Eye. The loop is very stable on targets or seperating targets and I am very confident with it and its funciton. I read lots of information about it prior to buying and decided to keep it for the E trac. If I did not have it I would of kept the Pro coil that came with the E trac and used it as it has really good reviews as well. I would say OHIO's above post is dead on. There is debate about which one would be better but they are close when tested side by side and you would be hard pressed to show true differences between them other than the look, shape, and feel.
You could take either one and if you think it is better for you it will be.
The 14 excellorator is just as sensitive but adds some depth. If I did not already have it I would get the larger SEF but feel that I am getting the results I want on the excellorator. It adds more depth in an area i hunt where targets are almost all below the 12 level and I have pulled stuff from 18 inces down (no lie) with it. Any three of these coils would be great for you when gettting depth is important.

good luck

I believe that the SEF coils allow you to run your machine at a higher sensitivity thereby "seeing" deeper targets better. At least that's what the 15x12 did for me. I have 8x6 on back order since the ProCoil is in the middle but would love to have the 12x10 to complete the SEF lineup! That will definitely be my next purchase. Once I get it, my ProCoil will be collecting dust. I figure I have to hang on to the ProCoil for warranty purposes on the machine as a whole. Otherwise, I'd be selling it.

what about the 15 x 12 and the 8x6 sef coils? Is the 8x6 better in trashier areas like the 5"accelerator coil. And if the 15 x 12 goes deeper then is that equivelant to the 8x6 but the 8x6 just able to get into smaller areas and the size of the 15 x12 covers more ground? Thanks charlie

NO, The 15x12 will get you deeper than the 6x8. But if you are in trashy sites it will fight to separate all the signals and you will in effect loose depth and not be able to run a higher sensitivity. If you are in a site like a beach where targets are few and far between and sink deep then the bigger coil will cover more ground and get deeper. I would use the bigger coil on a park that has been hunted hard and I seldom get targets on but in some cases like that targets wont exist below a certain line of depth anyway. You would want to know that the coins are down that deep before thinking that a bigger coil will find more coins there. The SEF coils are very stable and that does allow a higher sensitivity to be used but what good is it if I have the biggest coil and can only use a 6 setting of Sensitivity. A smaller coil may allow a higher number.
As for the 5 inch accelerator I have not used on my E trac. But I used it lots on a Whites and on construction sites it would kick butt over the larger coils because of so much trash. I was made fun of allot because of how slow I was but in the end I always felt right about that coil choice.
