e trac - protecting coil?

Hi All,

well I got my e trac a few days a go, I have been digging up the garden ever since!. lots of nails,
ancient nails maybe? hehe.

etrac has been great, still learning the ropes, after a few runs I found the bottom of the minelab coil is pretty scraped up, (lot of rocks/stones in the garden).
so I just read about using a coil cover to protect it, now i'm worried I should of done this, fairly newbi question,

but i'm not auctally sure if the etrac comes with/already has a coil cover?. its got the plastic case with FBS, logo on etc, is that a coil cover?
in which case its ok for that to be scaped?.
same question for the SEF 8x6.

I see some sites have a coil cover for the etrac/safari, guessing that for be the same?.

Would be VERY surprised if there was no coil cover fitted.
As far as I can recall all minelabs I have owned came with one, they fit up pretty snug!
I don't have Etrac though!
Have a good look at the coil, if it is smooth all round the outside you don't have a cover..

cover sticks out a little so you can tell if it's there.
 
When you look at the bottom is it smooth or have indentions in the bottom. The coil cover hides the indentions. By the way its a good idea to remove the cover and clean it and the bottom of you coil from build up of soil and the like (yes it does fit tightly, but removes fairly easily and snaps right back on). You'll need to work it off all the way 'round a little at a time and replace the same way, remember to snap the center also.

Hello All,

Thanks, I checked the bottom and realised there was a cover on there, I did not want to start pulling things apart un till I was sure it was just
the cover. taken it off and cleaned it now.

there are a few minor scratches under the coil cover on the coil, and on the part that sticks out (oppisite side to where the cable attaches to coil)
I guess thats not going to cause any problems?. I imagine the auctal coil is under the plastic housing anyway?. even after the cover is off?.

there is also a tiny little bump on the coil, looks like a bit of black paint, bit came off came off, I guess thats just something that can happen during
the process of making them.and not important?. (very minor bump)

and finally any idea if you can replace the auctal plastic housing (under the coil cover) incase it got damaged.

Just wondering does any of this change the performance of the detector, or are they pretty tough?.

Yes. There are replacement covers. As far as how long they last...I don't know. I've only got 150 hrs. or so on mine and I don't think I'm even close to getting it wore out. I do have one to replace this one, on hand, just in case.

I guess minor damage to the coil is expected/wont cause any problems?.
is it auctally possible to replace the plastic part of the coil, (not the cover but under it?).

worrying the little bit of plastic/scratches could stop the coil being waterproof, I guess even if water did somehow get it
into the coil, that would not damage control box out (as long as water did not touch the auctal box)?. worst case scenario
coil is replaced?.

ahh i'm worrying too much, got it second hand but spend a lot so wanting to make sure I don't turn it into a paperweight :)
 
I wouldn't worry about it...mine has been smashed into rocks and trees (unintentionally, of course) and I've had it submersed at the beach, etc. and haven't had any problems. I have never seen any posts talking about someone's Pro Coil going to pieces. I keep my equipment clean and am probably one of the most fastidious detectorists around when it comes to keeping my gear in shape, but don't let this get in the way of hunting difficult areas, etc. Priority number one is to get out there. Priority number two is to use the equipment to its utmost potential to find good targets (and have fun while doing so). Babysitting your equipment can be at odds with these goals...go for it...damn the damage. The coil is tougher than you realize.
 
There is no fix to replace the plastic part of the coil...it's all one piece...you may be able to seal a hole in the plastic, but it is not replaceable. I'd say it would take years of scraping your coil on gravel surfaces without your coil cover to finally expose the coil windings underneath the plastic. I wouldn't worry about that one bit. It's very rare. A more common problem with coils is a tweaked/broken wire in the cable or a loose connector.

Hi,

Thanks all.

been detecting really deep targets in the garden, seem to be digging forever, not got a decent pinpointer probe so takes ages,
guess its time to buy a decent probe, maybe the x1 or pistol probe, will see.
