E-Trac & pulltabs?

I tried searching on-line for the CD (googling the words you suggested), but apparently it's only for sale. Not something that can be listened to on-line (besides a single clip showing the difference between a dime and a penny, which is an altogether different task than aluminum vs gold). I'd have liked to have emailed the fellow, to see if he thinks audio learning could in fact:

a) tell the difference between aluminum and gold (and not just simply audio lessons to hear lower conductors better), and

b) could be used out in/on land sites where tabs, foil, and can shrapnel abound.

I have my doubts he would say that anyone can tell the difference in aluminum vs gold, and certainly not to the degree that would allow a person to roam junky parks leaving junk behind, while honing in on gold. If anyone has an email address to this fellow, and can invite him to comment in this thread, I would be very interested to see what he says. If anyone can demonstrate an ability to tell gold from aluminum (even with major allowances for false-calls), then it seems they should start applying this to the junky parks where, for 30+ yrs, scores of md'rs have passed foil, tabs, etc..... I mean, heck, why not? Hence I say again, it can't be done, and I suspect the video would concur. Yes dimes vs pennies are consistent (because they come out of the factory 100% identical), but not gold vs aluminum, which has infinate sizes and shapes.

Not kidding guys. The audio training CD explains while you here the tones side by side. If you dont believe me, just go on this forum, http://www.findmall.com/list.php?21 and search excalibur sounds or post a question to users. I'll see if I can get a section from the CD to post. HH , Mike

ok, I'm going to post this question openly to users there, and we'll see what the consensus is. Check it out, and we'll follow the responses.

Tom, looks like the post is getting some attention. It appears that some Excal users do think there is a sweet sound of gold most of the time. I wish you could here the Tony D CD. I do believe aluminum at times does mimic gold tone on Excal. I just wish the Etrac has a sweet tone on gold.
Also, what TID's do MDer's see most common on gold? I think 12-13 is common, but have read others like 12-21, 12-23. In fact, I dug soem aluminum 12-23's this morning. HH MIke

While I have never heard the sound of gold or aluminum on the Excalibur, I won't deny it. The venerable Garrett MasterHunter7 had the same sound for silver. I had to sit and train my ear for over many hours, but in the end I COULD tell when a target was silver over 90% of the time. That ability disappeared when newer models became digital and computerized. I can see it being possible with modern detectors.

Jason, the Explorer II has a silver tone also. The Etrac changed things with using conductive tones as a differentiator. HH MIke

Yes, certain machines had the "high end" very much expanded, so that a silver dime, vs a copper penny, was well-pronounced.

But we're talking coins here folks (dimes vs silver dimes vs copper pennies, vs quarters, etc...). And the difference between them (on some machines where admittedly the high end #'s had quite a good variation) and the aluminum vs gold conversation, is two totally different beasts. Because those coins always come off the assembly line 100% alike to each other, with no variance. They always contain the exact same amounts of alloys/metals, and are always 100% the same size. Thus their sounds and size (relative to depth) can be learned. The same can not be said for the aluminum vs gold debate, since gold and aluminum come in infinate sizes, shapes, and alloys.

tom, it is raining here in San Diego this morning but I am going to the beach anyway. With both my Xcal and my ET. I am going to try and predict before I dig and I will get back to you if I have any luck. Most of the time I agree with you for the reasons U give, but I do think I have heard tones that I could differentiate. Wishful thinking on my part? Terry

I dont think one can tell the difference on the Etrac or in general on aluminum and gold. Coins, that is something totally different.
