E-Trac versus the Explorer SE

Just curious here, I was wondering if there is that much improvement in depth and/or Target ID features to warrant the additional cost of the E-Trac? Since you can pickup an SE used for a pretty decent price, would you be better off going with the SE and maybe adding a PRO coil or something? Would performance be comparable for say the coinshooting area?

You definitely want a Pro coil. Don't spend money on a unit with a coil you have no intention of using that has little resale value. A used SE with a Pro coil for about $800 is a good deal , A E-Trac with a Pro coil for $1000 is a good deal. The E-Trac has some advantages over the SE, USB connection, better menu , better auto sensitivity, better screen are the first things one would notice.If you were used to using an Explorer in smart screen mode it will take some getting used to a E-Trac. The E-Trac also has trash density & difficult ground options. On the down side, the depth indicator on the E-Trac is not accurate as The Explorers in disc mode at shallow depths & the remapping of the ferrous numbers on the E-Track is bad if you were used to hunting in ferrous tones on a Explorer. Also on the E-Trac, the ferrous numbers vary quite a bit depending on depth & proximity to other targets but the conductive numbers are more stable.. The Explorer XS or XS II with a Pro coil will also do you a good job.. There are subtle improvements to all the Explorer models, more intuitive menus, processor speed, sticky nulls etc. All Explorers & the E-Track are equal as far as depth in my opinion. Having used Explorers for many years, on my first day with the E-Trac there were many more "I like that" moments than "I don't like that" moments.. All things considered, for coin shooting & if money wasn't a huge issue Id go with a a E-Trac. Also whichever model you decide on get Andy's latest book.. or maybe get the book before to help you make a decision.. The book is a great piece of work & Andy should be very proud of it... wildherre

Yep an SE (or an Exp II) with the Pro coil (or a 10x12 SEF) is a great deal right now. The E-Trac is awesome, but if you're lacking the funds, a nice used Exp with the addition of Pro coil will do a great job!

Great responses here to this question. Juat want to add that also you can run the E-Trac in "auto" sensitivity mode and still get excellent depth and stability, which may not work as well with the Explorer. Also consider the 12x10 SEF coil as well since it can be bought cheaper than the Pro coil and is a top notch coil. I run my E-Trac with the 12x10 all the time except where conditions call for a smaller coil.
