Eagle Head Saddle Horn Cover

This is the first time I have tried to upload an image so I hope this works. If not, I'll try to get my computer geek friend to help me at another time. I detected this about 3 weeks ago at home in SW PA whose owner gave us permission to hunt. It's about 3 in. tall and is fairly heavy brass. I thought it was the top of a cane but turns out to be a circa 1840-1860s cover that officers would put over the horn (pommel) on their saddle. They weren't official US issue but privately made. We also found a beat up large cent and a couple of Mercs but this was the best item. I hope it shows up....

I found one almost exact a couple months back at an old cellar hole also in SW PA.
Thought it was the top off a cane. Where did you find information on it?

Hi Flylaps - I googled the terms "eagle head, saddle" and a couple of other things and there was a site from Western & Eastern Treasures that depicted the same thing and gave the details of the usage and the dates used. In fact, the one they showed was also from SW PA. Hope you can locate it.

Mental image of that makes me laugh.
