EMI and my Silver?

Beale

New member
I was hunting a park yesterday wit overhead big lines. Normal set my Sensitivity at 8. I had to dropit down to around 5-6 area due to chatter. Is this normal under big overhead wires? Beale.

Yes it is normal. All detectors can suffer from electromagnetic interference (EMI). On some machines you will hear the chatter. On others you may not hear the interference. But you can be sure of one thing. Whether heard or not, if EMI is severe enough it affects the performance of all VLF detectors resulting in a loss of functional machine depth. EMI can be produced my overhead wires, cellphones, motors, underground cables....anything that generates an electrical field and is not adequately shielded. The list of EMI producers is quite long.

I've encountered it in varying degrees with different detectors. Often not too severe and disappears after moving a few yards, but sometimes it can be quite severe and limiting to the performance of the detector.

Thanks all! These were massive power lines running right over this park. I was finding a few coins but not many. The closer I got to the lines i had to turn sens down to 4-6 area, Beale.

I had the same thing happen at a house I was hunting I was kind of new to the machine then so It was a little frustrating, some main power lines ran right along the front yard. I had to drop my sense down about half way but was still able to find coins. The silver is a great detector for the price.
