EMI cure, redux and Garrett PP interference...

Just curious why the thread "EMI cure for the F series" had been closed?? We didn't see the results of people changing thier frequencies, nor, did we get to see the results of the gentleman that was having an EMI shielded pouch made for his Garrett Pro Pointer. I wanted to add that I have experienced a little EMI on my F75, more from buried power to "street" lights in parks (some were energized due to faulty photocell switches) than aerial power lines. As far as the Garrett PP, I carry one on my belt, right side, swing right handed and have never had a problem with interference, on or off, unless I hold the PP within an inch or two to the F75's reciever. So, to me, that means that this is not a generic problem.

How many folks with a particular F series detector have problems with interference from the Garrett PP, on or off?

I only notice the Garrett interference when I am in AM. I carry it on the left and will get a little wah right at the end of the left swing but only in AM. I was using BP so I don't know if non BP/CL all metal mode picks it up. It has never been enough of a problem to worry me. Carrying it on the right side and using a right handed swing will put the end of your right arc further away from the pinpointer, so that might be why you don't hear it... or maybe your LTD isn't as sensitive as it should be... (OH NO...) just kidding.

The F5 can deal with interference much better than others but I still want to try the RF choke on my F5 to see what it does. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. For EMI mitigation, you have the freq offset, the independant gain and threshold controls, and two separate stable setting points (motionless and in motion).

I have a garrett pro pointer and a detector pro pistol probe and I do not have any trouble with either one as long as I keep them a couple of feet away from the coil. Mike, I tried the RF choke on my original F75 and could not tell any difference but some people said they could. For me the LTD in BP mode handles EMI better than my original F75. I never run my LTD in anything other than BP mode, it is just better and less noisy for me. Randy

I'm with you Rol, mine on the and I swing with the right and I get no EMI even when its on the ground when I'm digging.

"OH NO".........you must have one of the less sensitive machines, like mine, that jbow was talking about!!

The problem with the Garrett pinpointer and the F75 is when its off.
Mr Bill wrote a nice piece on this if you can find it.
Basically he said the F 75s frequency excites the pinpointer then tries to read it as a signal.
Keep it on you back opposite side of swing arm.
Just because you cant hear it does not mean its not having a effect.

In a resent hunt running a GB SE that is almost always stable at max sensitivity
i was checking a target with a bud running a different machine but a very close frequency
a little over 19khz .
When i got within 30 feet of him both machines started to chat so backed off till both machine went quiet.
He checked a target but could not hit it until i shut my machine off the he hit it loud and clear.

I may be new to all of this, but, I DO know that some machines do not play well together. Some machines, however, can be run very close to each other without problems from interference. I did read the thread with Mr. Bill's post re: the reasons for interference between the Garrett PP and the F series locators which made very good sense. However, this issue does not apply in every case, i.e. myself and shooter have no problems with the PP and our locators (his is an LTD and mine is the Standard).

I'm sorry, you know I was only kidding...

You know the Detector needs to be in AM/BP with the sens turned pretty high and the pinpointer needs to be off for it to happen.

My LTD probably has faulty shielding... is that better?

and took the F5 out for several hours. Bought the RF choke and tried it out. Made no discernable difference to me. With it or without it the EMI response was at the same setting with the coil held still.

Was a good hunt. Thought I had another good gold wedding band but turned out to be gold plated. Two other junk rings to go with it. They will all wind up in the trash.

Did eyeball a nice 14kt loop earring in the Goodwill parking lot so the day wasn't a total bust.

You should know I was just kidding, as well. Well, except for the fact that I don't have the interference issue, As I have the standard model F75, I guess my results are not applicable to yours and maybe shooter is not running with the settings you mentioned.

Hey shooter! Have you tried running with the settings mentioned by J??? Just curious.

I'm always in BP about 90% of the time and in AM/BP, I was wondering about that interference, I don't get anything that seems to be bothering the LTD that everyone says, I carry on the left back hip and swing with the right no EMI at all no chatter, squeal nothing, but since someone mentioned it when I take it out of the holster and bring it forward I get a beep just once and turn it on and no EMI noise even with the Ltd on the ground next to the hole.
