Erratic chatter - FIXED:clapping:

My detector has been getting an erratic chatter for quite some time....and getting worse. It would just go nuts until I shook it or pushed several buttons. I knew that the problem was probably a loose wire, but I wasn't sure if it was in the coil or the control box. Lately, I've been thinking control box.

I bought the detector used(no warranty), so I wasn't worried about opening the control box and taking a look. A wire was loose at the connector for the coil. Looks like it didn't get enough solder from the factory. A quick solder job later....ALL FIXED.:clapping:

I took some pics of the inside....in case anyone was curious what it looked like. The processor is from Texas Instruments.

Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And if it is broke, you can't hurt it! Looks like you confronted the problem head on, and got it resolved. Good for you! Thanks for the post. HH Randy

Good to know.

Thanks for sharing.

I have two used X-Terra's that work fine, but you never know.

I actually thought it was going to be a circuit board problem at the Pinpoint/Detect button. It wasn't.

I'm just glad it was an easy fix that I could do myself.

Well done fixing it, now we know who to send our machines too LOL

Not much in side is there !

Having formal training in Electronics, other than the connectors, looks like "no user servicable parts inside"... LOL.... I aint touchin' it!

Sure looks different that the inside of my old analog detector made in 1985..LOL... times are a changin'

As I have made the exact same repair only 5 hours ago. Even the same wire! Go figure.
Like you, I was relieved to see that it was such a simple repair.

The warning I was getting, was CU alternating with CE plus the circle was flashing. Bottom line, it was not recognising the coil (any coil). I rang up Minelab on Thursday and the techie indicated that it could be an intermittent connection problem. I was going to send it in, but it was going to cost around $100 (including freight). So I thought it wouldn't hurt to look.
I spoke with an electrician at work yesterday and he warned me to be careful soldering the wire back, due to the other wires being so close to where we soldered it as you can desolder the other wire due to their closeness to each other.

sweet......... glad you got it fixed..seems like an unusual place for a broke wire but I guess not with nick having had the same problem..

I was getting the chatter also. No warrenty left so it doesnt hurt to look. Nothing was broke but I made sure the plugs were in and made sure no wires were broke. The detecter has been working great since! Crossing my fingers it stays that way!

Jack the chatter could have been from wind or emi from power lines, etc.

I'm not sure what model you have but when that happens I just auto noise cancel and it's fixed. Once the auto didn't fix it so I just lowered the channel one and it solved it.

It wasn't wind. I should have been alittle more specific. I have a xterra 70. I tried all those things. NC, reset etc. It would not only chatter some but the detector would go nuts. If I would set it down to dig something the numbers would start to jump all around. Like something was loose. I have never dropped it but maybe something had happened to make something lose connection alittle. I really don't know. But after I checked connections and the plugs the detector has been running great. Sometimes making sure connections are tight can make a difference in performance. I keep crossing my fingers that it stays that way. HH JB

I have an old Garrett Grand Master detector that does that from time to time.. it is due to bad connection from the battery pack and the detector. I hope yours keeps working good...
