etrac, emulator target ids

finderfind

New member
Hello All,

I'm waiting for my Etrac to arrive,
in the mean time, I got started on the etrac emulator so I have an idea of how to use the etrac
before it arrives, which has been great,

I downloaded us coins/gold/silver targets, but cannot find any for other items, bottlecaps, nails, etc,
does anyone know where I can download some?. also UK coins, roman coins, etc.

finally from what I understand, in the UK at least its best to avoid using much discrimination, do iron targets always
show up at the bottom right of the screen, so all iron would be masked by say the relic mode?.
if not what exactly does relic mode mask, seems very close to all metal mode?.

Thanks.

Try Max's site at http://explorer2.free.fr/download.html. The Sabisch pattern has a few junk targets (like 3 or 4). There is another one that has some trash targets called "Etract_usa_coins.zip"...I can't remember where I saw it, but I can email it to you.

Regardless of your pattern, iron can show up anywhere depending on too many variables to count...soil, type and condition of iron, rust, co-located targets, depth, settings, pattern, user, etc. What most folks do is "dig it all" for a while until you become familar with what the machine is trying to tell you.

Hi Beep,

I am thinking I should use all metal, then set a different user mode or pattern to decriminate out caps/nails/etc, so if I get a signal I can change user mode to see if it matches one of the decrimination patterns, although I will dig all signals I think.

is it possible to load a custom pattern into quickmask, or can you only move the bar up/down?.
and finally I understand things can vary, but if I set the etrac to ignore nails and pulls in the combine/options, would it
usually ignore them and still find coins etc?.

Thanks

That is an excellent technique to use. Using an AM pattern in search mode and switching to a discrimination pattern using QuickMask to check the target is what a lot of people do. With QM you can set discrimination for FE and CO (up/down and left/right)...I usually only use the FE portion of QM and set it on FE20 or 27. You cannot load a custom pattern into QM, but you can load the QM pattern into search mode.

Here is an AM pattern with Nails and Pulltabs rejected. The red coordinates are where US coins fall (in a bench-test environment). This includes...

US Gold Coins
Dollars
Half Dollars
Quarters
Dimes
Half Dimes
Nickels
Three Cents (Cu/Ni)
Three Cents (Ag)
Two Cents
Memorial Cents (Zn)
Memorial Cents (Bronze)
Wheat Ear Cents
Indian Head Cents (Bronze)
Indian Head Cents (Cu/Ni)
Flying Eagle Cents
Large Cents
Half Cents
Spanish Reales

You can see that you would miss nickels and a bit more where Nails intersect the FE12 line. If you chopped off the top of the Nails pattern and opened up the Pulltab area to allow nickels, you wouldn't miss much.

Hi Beep,

Thanks, I will probably set up an extra pattern or user mode for nail reject and cut off the top
as you suggested.

adding an iron mode/blanking out the entire bottom I guess that would risk losing more?.

Thanks again

The only reason most folks open up the FE range is because of target contamination and mineralization. Personally, in my soil, most targets hit near the FE12 line, even at depth. But, if a good target is next to iron or your ground is highly mineralized, it could drag the FE component of the good target down towards the bottom of the screen, or at least make the signal bounce up and down a bit. If you run a fairly open pattern in SmartFind you can switch to QuickMask with the bottom half of the QM pattern rejected (like from FE21-35 rejected). This will give you two patterns with which to test the target. If you get a good signal in search mode, but it drops out when in QM, then you have an indication that it could be good sounding iron. Dig everything for a while and see what happens...experience is the best teacher.

That pulltab section will kill virtually all gold, when i first got mine i rejected the foil and pulltabs in the preset then passed some 50 or so gold items in the learn window, when i finished all the foil and pultab shadow had gone, lesson learned.I have rings down to 12-1 and as high as 12-39 I've had the same on the 11 line and a few on the 13 too so be carefull what you disc out.

You are certainly correct about the gold...that 12-39 must have been a honker (what was it?). I focused on coins as that is a good place to start for a new E-Trac user (and ff mentioned coins explicitly). Any discrimination on the FE12 line (or above and below) is bad, imo, but there are occasions when a few small spots of discrimination in the pt area can save you a lot of time (by disc'ing out common pt varieties in your area).
