Excal II setup

E-TREC-Virginia

New member
I'm getting a new Excal II with the 10" coil and was hoping I could get some feedback from you Excal users as to what is the best setup for dry/wet sand and shallow surf (up to chest deep) hunting. I've heard/read that the stock setup is not the most comfortable setup and a lot of folks either purchase an aftermarket shaft (like the Anderson Excalibur Over Under Shaft) or hip mount their control unit/battery pod. What do you guys/gals feel is the best setup and what brand of shaft or hip mount system would you recommend? I have several medical issues with my back and I'm looking for a setup that will alleviate as much stress/pressure as possible. Your input/feedback is much appreciated.

I use a Plugger's straight shaft. When I first got my Excal II I used the stock set up and had to switch arms every 15 to 20 minutes. The first time I used the Plugger's, I was able to hunt for 3 straight hours without even wanting to switch arms, made a big difference. You can also just go ahead and chest mount the control unit and not even use the straight shaft, just depends on your preference. I just like the straight shaft so I don't put unwanted stress on the cables. HH

When i first started out i hip mounted mine it was a bit of a pain to mess with the knobs..... especially at chest deep. I ran into a smart hunter on the beach one day from the forum, Erickk, and he gave me the information i needed to make my own straight shaft. Having everything on a shaft ensures you dont pull on the cables..... like he said you get constant movement out there on the wires otherwise. Plus you dont feel all attached. Once you get the straignt shaft blanced you can always adjust the handle and armrest to your liking.

PLugger rod with a side-side setup.

Plugger Straight Shaft = 2 piece travel model. It balances the machine by making your control box behind the elbow. Remove the lower shaft and it fits in the Minelab carry case for travel. Search for them on the ever so popular auction site.
Never used a chest mount set up, he has those too.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. Decided to go with the Plugger 2 piece travel shaft.

Steve,

Listen to these guys - they will point you in the right direction with anything you might have questions about. They got me on the right track for both the excal and the GT - best information out there is in here. Love the Pluggers 2-pc shaft; need to get another one. The stock set up is nearly painful relative to a balanced outfit that I can use all day, wet or dry.

Eric has some real nice setups, he turned all of us onto Aircraft spruce...just seach that at the top and all the post of eric will come up...

I have used onlinemetals for 6061-t6 tube and other metal supplies. I think they compare favorably on price.
Cheers
