Excalibur 1000 On It's Way!!!!

Just ordered my first Excalibur 1000. I have been reading many of your posts for quite awhile. I thought it was about time for me to jump in. I was a little concerned about the initial settings when the new unit arrives. However, I have read several posts including a couple from Gulf Hunter where he talks in detail about what settings works for him. I should hope to be a 1/3 successful as him. I now need to buy a scoop. What size and type do you recommend? Thanks for the help and support. This is a great forum.

Captin: You should get a 5 or 6 inch sand scoop for your treasure hunting activities. The long handles are the best and easy to dig with. I bought an Excal 2 about a year ago and I have found a ton of coins with it and two nice gold nuggets. Once you use it for awhile you can figure out what tones to dig, usually the highest tones are best and you can weed out the foil and junk tones, but aluminum is still almost impossible to weed out. Best to get a bunch of change and practice with it in the yard or at the beach on coins to learn the good target tones. Its about the easiest Minelab I have ever owned to use. Just fully charge your battery first before using it. I love mine. you will too. Great machine. I will look at my setting when I get home.

As far as the size of scoop, when using the Excal, a back hoe will work nice.

Captain Hook, Good choice on the Excal, It will serve you well! Make sure you get Clives books on the Excal, This will give you a big advantage over the competition on the beach. I like his all metal {pinpoint} Hunting, I have hit rings at 18inchs with the 800

OldBeechnut, thanks for all the information. What a great collection of scoops in your picture. Still not sure what to look for at the boat shop in regards to the shaft, but I will figure things out as I go. Several people told me a straight shaft is a must for the Excal. I plan on using mine wading the beach here in North Florida. I am a member of a local club, but very few people say they are water hunting. Maybe they just don't want to talk about it. Looking forward to making my initial trip with the Excal this weekend. I will get around to reading Clives book as you mentioned. Would you start out searching in the all metal pinpoint mode?

Some guys may tell you that the pinpoint mode is all they detect in but the truth is that you will be digging alot of iron trash if you use that mode on a trashy beach or on land. Better to start with the discrimination mode and start to learn the tones on good signals. Go hunt in your trash can and get an aluminum can and some other metal like foil, nails, screws, and get some coins, penny, nickle, dime, quarter and one piece of gold and put them on the ground and listen to the signals each one gives. The high tones are good targets. Get a piece of silver jewelry as well and listen to it. Once you learn those good tones you are ready to go detecting. It will find everything that you come over as long as its not too deep or small. Also, if the detector discriminates iron it will blank out over the target. Keep moving and listen carefully, it will be easy to find coins. Go to the pinpoint mode once you hit a good target to find it in the cross hairs and start digging. Remember not to wear a ring or watch when you detect and get a pouch to put your goodies and trash into. Fill in your holes and be a good detectorist. Bob

Captain.... I would use Gulfhunters settings until you learn your Excal, they work well just about any where. TnBob is right if you get a trashy beach you will be digging alot of junk. Just like Each beach and type of hunting requires a different scoop, So does ones hunting technics change for each beach. Learn your machine and Read Clives Books and you will be ready for any beach!

Thanks Guys for all the great information. I did the various test that you listed when I started out using my GTI 1500 and it did make a difference in what targets I actually dig. I have a test garden set up in my back yard. I will be tuning my ear before me and the Excal go to the beach. I have been wanting a water machine. I know there will be a learning curve so I was just trying to learn from some of the great people here on the forum like you guys. Thanks again.
