I think Rick hit it. Time for new batteries (rechargeables).Possibly the low battery alert your hearing, so is the battery fully charged$$ or the battery pack bad. Will it make the noise only when swinging the coil, they try it while you hold the coil in the air away from any metal. If by swing the coil is when the noise comes and go it could be a bad connection in the coil or cable. They are some of the tings I would check before getting too deep in it, try to isolate all you can by trying different things.
I hope you get some different ideas from others too.
Rick

Yep, I was thinking back to my Excal days and that dreded squeal !!!! Low battery...I think Rick hit it. Time for new batteries (rechargeables).
Where I seen this problem more with the Sovereigns as many tried using 8 rechargeable batteries in the alkaline pack which is not enough voltage and seen after using for a while you get the low battery squeal, then maybe it worked ok for a couple minutes and do it again and get more frequent until not usable Some say there never had a problem, but it is made for the full 12 volt as the rechargeable are only 1.2 volts fully charged which is only 9.6 volts and close to the low battery alert. I have seen one of the rechargeable battery pack in one of batteries in the Sovereign GT back go bad and give a problem and work, but kept giving a low battery alert when using it, I recharged it with my SunRay charger incase his charger was bad, but still did it and was able to to check it and seen it wasnt 12 volts and cant remember what it read in volts, but was lower than it should have been, so he tied mine out of my GT and no problem, so I order in a new rechargeable for him, no more problem other that I tried fixing his old one with replacement cells for a spare one, wasnt as easy as I thought it would be and was a tight fit and worked, but put the cover back on and it shorted out and I was surprised how fast the thing caught fire and melt lot of the Plastic. If I have to do another I will take it to a place with the right tools for the job.Thing about the low battery squeal is that it is not normally intermittent. Once the battery drops below a certain voltage, the detector squeals and it is a death squeal until the batteries are recharged and not something that lets you go back detecting without charging the batteries. I had a cable from the battery corrode and would intermittently cause the detector to make short squeals but most of the time operate normally. At home on the bench I found the intermittent issue and replaced the cable and connector (pins were corroded too).
Thank you, I suspected that could be the problem. I charged the battery pack but they could only be charged to 10.95 volts.I think Rick hit it. Time for new batteries (rechargeables).
Thank you, I think it is a bad battery in the pack. After charging for 16 hours the pack only read 10.95 volts.Thing about the low battery squeal is that it is not normally intermittent. Are you using the stock Minelab charger? It is not a peak detection charger so it is easy to overcharge the batteries by leaving it on too long and damaging cells.Thank you, I suspected that could be the problem. I charged the battery pack but they could only be charged to 10.95 volts.

Time for a new battery. If I remember correct the stock battery charges up to around 14 volts, the new Li-ion charge to 12.6 and last a lot longer.Thank you, I suspected that could be the problem. I charged the battery pack but they could only be charged to 10.95 volts.
