Excalibur Sword problem

I recently bought an Excalibur Sword model from someone who had been using it in up to chest deep water. He claimed it was watertight prior to me buying it. When I received it I hooked up the battery pod & the Excal. worked as it should. I then took it to a local fresh water pond to give a try with my scuba gear. I went in about chest deep with the submerged Excal and turned it on & started swimming. About one minute later the excal started to screech very loudly in the pinpoint mode. I switched it over to the disc mode and there was only an erratic fluttering sound. I could not correct the problem so I left the pond & headed for home. After looking in the control pod I noticed numerous droplets of water inside on the bottom.
I removed the end cap and unplugged the headphones. I then ran a hair dryer about 18" away on low heat. This allowed warm air to flow into the control pod. After 15 minutes I turned off the hair dryer. All the water droplets has disappeared. I then plugged the headphones back in and tried the Excal to see if the problem was resolved. Unfortunately it had not & the issues with the Excal had not been corrected. This unit is in outstanding condition & I'd really appreciate anyone who can provide any info on someone that may be able to repair it. Thank you

That is exactly why I don't use the old Sword model of Excal. From a performance standpoint it is probably the best one ever made, hand built by Gary Storm and his team in NY. Minelab probably won't work on it at Lisle either, because they no longer have parts, especially not a control housing tube. I would PM this guy, he is probably the only hope you have of a revival. PM OldBeechnut or Mel Parker, as they are NY specialists.
Good luck with the resurrection, it WILL be worth it if OBN or Mel Parker can help you. I had one a few seasons back and sold it before it broke and became an expensive paperweight!

Thanks GH, Good to see your still around.

I have stopped all repairs (being a fulltime pirate now) but I am betting your top o-rings are shot, Since Minelabs stopped servicing these machines several years ago. I can recommend the correct size if you need and they are very easy to replace..

Check the battery pod for water too. Sounds similar to the way my Sword sounded when the battery pod leaked.

And I would go back to who ever sold it to you as a working waterproof unit, explain what happened, and see what he may do.

Good luck.

Seller on Ebay from Indiana that sold me the Excal Sword appears to be a "horse trader" who just buys and sells detectors. I contacted him & it appears he has no real background history on what he is selling. After I bought this detector from him he had another Excal Sword up for sale on Ebay shortly afterwards. He had recently bought this Excal from an Ebay seller in NY. When he (re) listed it on Ebay he used the NY seller's information & pictures. In reading this info you would have thought he had owned it for some time. I filed a claim with Ebay in an attempt to get a refund. However because I had tried to solve the leaking problems by resealing the end cap O rings with silicone grease this voided Ebay's return policy.
I heard from Kellyco today & they were able to solve the leaking issue.Apparently there was a micro hairline crack in the control pod & was located with some difficulty by Barry the repair tech. He had to remove the electroinics from within & resealed the crack with epoxy.Additionally he went thru the detector & replaced all the knob O rings & pressure tested it. It's being shipped out today after a one week turn around. I've been using these Sword Excals with scuba gear since 1994 when they first came on the market. I've also tried all other newer Excal versions. The Sword model is by far the best !

Received Excal Sword back from Kellyco yesterday Checked detector out with scuba gear @ 15'-20' today for 1 hour in a fresh water pond swimming area. This unit is working perfectly. No leaking & all the control pod knobs now turn with ease. Kudos to Barry/service tech @ Kellyco. Money well spent !!
