Excelerator 4.5X7 and the X-8

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
I have an XS with the stock coil and a 4.5X7. I know the X-8 is a good coil for depth in trash and would like to get one, but I do have the 4.5X7. Would it be worth the $$ to add the X-8 to my inventory or would I be duplicating the performance of the Excelerator?

Larry ,I have the minelab 800 and use it most of the time.It is a awesome coil never used the 4.5 ,The 8" is a all round coil gets good depth and you can swing it all day long.Hope this helps.

Having both and using them both a great deal of the time I have to say there is a night and day difference. That they are for two entirely different purposes. The 4.5x7 is for very dense trash and the SR8 is both for medium trash and all around use. The SR8 gets way better depth than the 4.5x7, not quite as much as the stock 10, but amazingly more than you would think. The 4.5x7, because of it's size, naturally gets between the heavy trash better. The deepest targets I've found with it though, top out about 6 or 7 inches. The separation on the SR8 is also quite unbelievable for it's size and has utterly surprised me again and again, in fact I honestly think it gets better separation than any other medium sized coil in it's class (which I do have, and do use). Don't take this as a knock on the 4.5x7, they just have two different uses but if I were to choose between them, I'd go and did go to the SR8 first because it was also an excellent, every day, all around coil to go to.:detecting:

Larry, the SR8 compared to the ML8, The ML8 is smaller, heavier and yet does not get either the depth of the SR8, or as good separation. The SR8 is a land slide in that comparison. However, I could own a perfect SR8 coil and a crappy ML8, for all I know, but I will tell you if both the SR8 and the Ml8 had no obvious benefits, one over the other, The SR8 is a great deal lighter, and therefore would be my choice. Hope this helps.

That's what I would have guessed but your opinion kind of sealed the deal for me. I need a coil to break the 7" layer, but get though the trash better than the stock. Next year I'm going over the yards that I have hunted with my DFX. Anxious to see what is below 7" land.

Digit, I have the 4.5x7 but have not used the sr8, question i have is, the 4.5 is off base quite a bit on the depth meter compared to the stock coil. How does the sunray do in that department? (I'm trying to justify getting one)..thnx

Hey Larry, I do have the 4.5 x 7 & love it. I also use the 8" & like it, too. But, I hunt in high trash areas that are really old, so I know there are good targets if you can weed through the trash. My expereince with these coils is that they all have a use but you have to find the one that works best for you in your area. A larger coil may do very well in less trashy areas but a smaller coil will do well in trash. I also have the 5" excelerator coil & love it, too. Because of the areas that I hunt in I may have found my best finds with smaller coils. I also know that the 4.5 x 7 will work well with a lot of sensitivity & still give good seperation, tonal ID & not alot of falsing.

In conclusion, I would get the 4.5 x 7. It seems to be the one I choose most often, but, It simply depends on where I'm hunting. Good luck & I hope this helps.

I use the Ex II

That's more because of size difference. The smaller coils (smaller than the stock ten) will show an object deeper than it really is because your machine's depth gauge is calibrated for a ten inch coil. My SE's depth gauge is real close to accurate with an 8 inch coil, but a 5 or 4.5x7 and it's quite a bit off just because the coils are so much smaller than what the machine is calibrated for. That's not a bad thing, just the way it is. Same thing on large coils as well, if you use a 12 inch coil or larger, the depth Gage might say 6 inches when really the target is 8 inches. The larger the difference in size between the ten inch and your coil you put on, the more your depth gauge will be off and that applies to both smaller and larger coils.

Larry,
I have never used the 4.5x7 but I have used the SunRay X-8. It is a great all round coil and really good in the trashy areas that I usedit in. I never put the stock coil back on my machine. If you decide on getting an X-8, I think you will be impressed. Don

I have both of these coils and I can tell you the SR does go deeper. I like the 4.5 x 7 for its lightness and it does seem to work better in trashy areas.

When I use the 8" coil I just act as thought it is a 10" calibration. I also adjust my gain up by 1 point when using a smaller coil to duplicate the "deep target" sound. But I use a gain of 5 on the stock adn 6 on teh samll coil so I can hear the depth vs looking at the meter.

Thanks all, I think I will be getting an X-8 and selling the 4.5X7.

I don't have an 8" , But I do have the 4.5X7 and think it's a Great coil if you use it on trashier lawn and field areas . I stopped using it around cellar-holes since the leaf and pine needle build up in the woods really cuts down on its depth (Ex's don't like air space). I do have to send my 4.5X 7 in for repair since it falsie's at the end of each swing . I've found allot of coins with it and hope they can fix it . You might want to try the new 6" Excelerator .I've heard allot of good things about it .
