EXII for SE?

Shambler

New member
I'm looking for opinions from someone who's used the EXII and then switched to the SE. Was it worth the change? Is the SE that much faster and more sensitive? I'm wondering if I should get an SE or just get a pro coil for my EXII and save a grand.

Any help is much appreciated.

I didn't opt for the SE Pro as I already have the XS and II Explorers. What I did decide to do was get the Minelab Pro Coil and install it on my Explorer II. I could not believe the difference it made with weight and separation of targets for it's size. I was using the platy but have now retired it to the closet and am strictly using the Pro Coil. I am finding stuff in areas I have hunted with other machines and Minelab for years now that I have the new coil on. For my opinion only I would opt for a $200 investment over the SE or SE Pro. There is a market for the Pro Coil and it would be smart move to try it first. I have friends with the SE and I don't really see all that much difference in them other than the coil. Hope this helps as it's all I can offer.

I would just upgrade the coil to the Pro or 12x10 SEF coil. Save yourself some money. Their still the same machine guts-wise.

Save your money I have had all the models plus many more brands and went back to Explorer 2.
SE to sensitive for me did not care for it at all over the EX2 as far as the coil I still use the sun-ray product with great success.
In short been around the world and came back to the Explorer 2.
Gods Gift To Relic Hunters!

I hunt with a very experienced Explorer user and he has both II and SE. He prefers and uses the II more than the SE because of the sensitivity and slower processing. Sometimes the slower processing is better since it can run more stable. I'd keep the II and just put a Pro coil on.

This is just my opinion. I used my new SE for a year. Now it hangs as a backup for my EII. My biggest problem with the SE is that the deep iron falses hit like a coin on the EII. That is, they sounded good from two directions (swing east-west, turn, swing north-south). The EII will do that once in a great while, usually on a bent nail, but my SE did it all of the time. So, I started using all metal in ferrous tones to compensate for the problem. I think a lot of people came to this solution and swear by it. It is a good relic hunting setup. I really like to hunt using conductive tones though, where you don't have to look at the screen much to figure what you have, just go by tones.

After a year of frustrating use of the SE, I got the EII out and tried it again - It was like an old friend (I have used the EII since they came out). An old friend that does not lie about deep iron. The SE will hang as a backup machine or be sold. I did send it in for a checkup. Minelab did me right, but acted like they had never heard of such a problem and really seemed to not get it. I know they have had this complaint many times. They put new guts in the control box and gave me a new slimline coil. I tried it for a while but really have lost confidence in the SE.

The reason I bought the SE was the advertised claim that it handles iron better. I noticed that claim came out of the ads pretty quickly. It surely does not handle iron better than the EII.

OK, I am done whining about a $1000+ detector that works worse than the previous model, purchased under false calims.... Can you tell this left a bad taste in my mouth?

I am sure others have a completely different take on the SE. I do think it is odd though, that lots of folks started using ferrous tones and all metal after the SE came out. Before that (EII) everyone was hunting in conductive tones with just a small strip of iron mask to the left.

Hope this helps and HH - BF

I agree that Minelab should know about the iron problem and coil problem. Especially with all the feed back they surely get from very experienced hunters. As far as cond sounds, i think its apparent they made dramatic changes in the E-trac to take advantage of Cond sounds. I think we all know that if their sounds are based on the use of Ferr or Cond sounds that Ferr digital just isnt as accurate as Cond. I like to hunt in Cond too BF but find myself having to switch based on the amount of iron. The other option, which i dont really like, is to up my IM or go to Auto sensitivity. I dont even have the Pro Coil so i really have to work some areas. I thought about upgradeing to the E-Trac, but i think ill give that some time as well. Minelab is produceing a lot of new equipment fast i hope their service doesnt suffer. Id sure like to see a couple more reginal service centers here in the states.

I have the EX-II and once last year while hunting with a friend who has the SE, we hunted a site in the morning then traded detectors for the afternoon. For whatever reason, I wasn't doing any better with his SE. When I told him this on the way home, he said he had the EX-II and had upgraded to the SE, and he stated that the SE didn't really make enough improvement that he was just as well off with the EX-II, and wished he spent the extra money at the time on accessories.
So I only have a few hours use on the SE and nothing made me think to upgrade my EX-II to the SE. 2c.
