Explorer II Vs Etrac

Digger22

New member
Now that my Explorer II is working great, I am looking at the new technology with 'I need another toy' in my eyes.
I am wondering how much difference could I expect when hunting with an Etrac vs my Explorer II.
I would image depth with a 12 x 10 SEF on either machine would be about the same, but would target separation be faster with the newer machine? Does the Etrac have a greater number of tones than the Explorer II? What other advantages would I have with the Etrac?

At first I was looking at the 3030, but I read of a few issues with it, and I don't need a lot of the bells and whistles that the ctx30303 has, besides 2500 bucks for a machine that I cannot use my existing coils on is a lot of $$$$$, so now I am considering the Etrac.

What do you folks think, especially the ones who have or do own both machines.

Why fix what ain't broke comes to mind...having used the XS, 11, SE, SE pro feel the XS was as good or better than them all..

Never used the E-trac but understand it has its plus and minus features from previous Explorer models.
Indeed a comprehensive report from one that has used both sure would be good reading...especially for those thinking of upgrading....

If you know your explorer well, my advice rent or borrow Etrac for few days and compare to your explorer. Etrac is a bit faster in discrimination.

The EX2 is the smoothest of the explorers but the SE is the most sensitive AND has an ID'ing all metal pinpoint which none of the other explorers have.

My favorite feature on the E-Trac is the "quick mask" which instantly switches you to an all metal mode to help get a cleaner signal and therfore give you an added edge on deciding whether or not to take a chance on digging an iffy target...as it allows you to watch the ferrous numbers.

Don't think you need to upgrade from the EX2 in order to keep making good finds though because it is an awesome detector.

Here is a link to a question I answered about 3 years ago and it directly pertains to what you are asking.,

Thanks to all who replied. I have been given a lot of food for thought.

I challenge anyone with an Etrac to find a signal in the ground that my old XS can't sound off just as good or better on. Anyone up for it?
Same coil, same target I'm betting there is no difference. But I could be wrong. I was one time.

Is there any difference between the Etrac and Explorer when it comes to hunting coins and jewelry? I currently have a T2 and is a good relic machine. Getting the urge to try something else....

I am with you Neal....still think the XS is as deep or deeper than the supposed upgrades that followed...

Stasys gives good info when he says if you know your unit well try upgrades before you upgrade,,,

I still use the EX2 quite a bit. As you put it..."it's all about the sound".
EX2 or SE...they are both great machines.

If I had to wait on the digital Id to respond, I'd have a frustrating hunt. The smart find is a little faster, but not by a whole lot. If I want to look at vid, I have to move the coil away from the target area and hope that when I get over the target again the vid will respond. I've given up on that.
Maybe that's one of the reasons I am looking to try the etrac. It helps my (brain) to remember looking at a visual I'd in combination with the sound, but I guess it the end it doesn't matter, cause if its a repeatable signal (not a real low tone) I'll dig it anyway.

I have really come to appreciate the folks on this forum! And thanks again for everyones help in making my Exp II useful again.

I own both the Explorer XS and an E-Trac. To me the E-Trac balances in the hand better than the XS. I also prefer the number system of the E-Trac. With the XS in the smart screen the target is shown with cursor position and the sound tones. As to depth, I don't think there is much difference. I run my E-Trac in digital mode, which also has the small smart screen showing cursor position. With the E-Trac you can run two tone ferrous, this is not available on the XS. The XS is a great machine and will still outperform much newer machines. However the E-Trac to me is worth the the price. My friend has an Explorer SE Pro, when you compare it to the E-Trac the main advantage I see is the two tone ferrous. I am going to sell my XS,

Bryce has been using his E-trac more this year as you probably know...but he always ends up back with the Explorer SE or the EX2.
I've used his E-trac some but I just like the sound of the Explorers better. JMHO:beers:

I own both. I don't care much for the VID, of course i'm used to the smartfind feature on the Ex2. My Etrac equipped with SEF 10X12 coil cannot compete with the depth capability of my Ex2. I put a couple dozen hours on the Etrac, it will be the machine I use when my Ex2 dies.
