Explorer SE Probe!! Sunray or uniprobe

mtpockets

New member
Any Explorer user's out there using One or the other?

like to get some feedback as to which they preferr... I hear the SE is a lil heavy for some.... Not sure how solid you guy's are

But I'm a Solid 6' 235# guy with some pretty good Pythons!!!!!

But all In all after swinging for several hours I know it does take a toll on ya....

That's why I may be looking into the Uniprobe..... Will it just Get in the Way?

Are their phones better then the stock SE phones?

Help a Bro Out!!!!!

I have the Sunray probe on my SE. I think the biggest advantage is the ability to identify targets with the Sunray probe. Pretty sweet feature. It's actually a "mini" coil.

I just got the Uniprobe. The reason I didn't go with the Sunray is that it would be attached to my SE and I couldn't really use it with some other detectors I have. Also, I considered the added weight for all day hunts.

Advantages: Uniprobe has greater depth, is light weight, and portable. You can use one with any detector. I like the narrower probe, too. Its pulse induction and so far unaffected by any outside electrical interference and soil mineralization.

Disadvantages: It will not discriminate the target like the Sunray, as it's using your Minelab circuitry. However I figure that I've already decided I'm going to dig the target (by using the SE) at that point, so target ID isn't an issue. On the other hand, the uniprobe will detect ALL metal in the hole, and won't null out if there is a nail next to the desired target.

Bottom line: My hunting buddy really likes his Sunray, and with the extreme depth these machines are now getting, a probe of some kind is a real time saver (could help prevent a scratch on a key date coin, too). I wouldn't have considered buying ANY probe had I not seen how effective his has been. My preference was determined mainly by being able to use the probe with other machines. It easily fits in a jacket pocket and can be turned on and used right away. I don't bother with headphones on the Uniprobe, though it has 1/8 " jack. The speaker sound is plenty loud enough to pinpoint a target.

I'll let you know more when I have a full season under my belt. Both my SE and the Uniprobe basically came just when the ground froze up here in MN so I'm already suffering detector withdrawal!

I've never used or even seen a Uniprobe(I was a member of a large Metal Detecting club in California, and don't think I ever saw anyone there with a Uniprobe). I have the Sunray X1 probe for my EXII. I think it is probably one of the best if not the very best accessory you can get for your metal detector. Digging in those holes, sometimes the finds are hard to find, and the Sunray probe sure makes it easier. Having said that, I also keep the Vibraprobe 560 on my detecting belt and use it frequently also.

Hey Cadawg,

Here is a link to detector pro and the Uniprobe

Knipper: Thanks for that Great Reply....

I Like the Universal aspect of the Uniprobe myself.... And Also when I hit those Gold laden area's wether I have my detector with me or not " Say when Game Hunting" and I come across a stream or something...

I can use the Probe to check the Cracks within the bedrock area's....

It's like having a Mini Detector with you .. That's my take on it....

I think it may come in handy many times......

The ability to use your headphones with the sunray far surpasses any of the advantages of the uni or any other hand held probe in my opinion.

I cant tell you how many times Ive had multiple targets in a hole and ran the sunray around the edges (top, bottom and sides)till I hear the desired response that caused me to dig in the first place. In trashy areas the uniprobe seems to have me digging in to many directions. I hunt with my SE in 0 discrimination so I hear the bad with the good. I just zero in on the good with the probe. HUGE time saver.

I agree it is almost a must to have some sort of probe. Im usually back up with hole covered and detecting before my buddy without a probe has even found his target.

too much interference using the Uniprobe with the Explorer.Get a Swingy Thingy from Doc to take the weight off.The uniprobe is great for single freq detectors.

I just had the sunray installed on my EX-II and used it for the 1st time a couple days ago. I also carried the Vibra-probe 560. My partner used my Wizard. I have no regrets with the sunray. I find it convenient and hardly notice any extra weight. It looks cool too. I also have no regrets with the hand-held pinpointers too. I like em all and don't know why I didn't get one (actually a few) years ago, didn't pay attention I guess. Anyway I placed a post on this forum which I then had to get pinpointers after the replies. No regrets except I wish I would have got them sooner.

Although the Sunray X1 was very tempting, I also wanted a probe that I could use with both my Explorer and XT-70 (and possibly my CZ-70 if I want to bring it out of retirement) so it was a no-brainer in my book, the pocket uniprobe. In fact, I am in the middle of doing a bit of a modding project with my new pocket uniprobe. More on that later as I progress on it...:)

I have the Sunray and I am looking very seriously at the Headphone version of the Uniprobe.

However, for me the absolute ultimate is the Periscope. They no longer make it and I know when this one is gone I won't be able to replace it. Too few were willing to pay the $569 price of the Periscope. I would do it again with no question asked. It NEVER falses on iron. It lets you know EXACTLY where the target is before you dig. You dig far less trash. In fact, you dig far less period.

It does add some extra weight, but my day is much less laborious since I don't have to dig as much and when I do I'm not bent over searching in the hole. Still, it was a great idea that just didn't catch on.

I already have a Sunray probe for the EX and DFX. Recently I added a Nautilus to my collection. So now I have two Fishers and the Nautilus that do not have probes. That is where the Periscope comes in for now. I'll probably go with the Uniprobe next since it will work with any of my Detectors including my EX replacement.

If you only use one detector, then going with the Sunray is a very good choice.

I have a Sunray on my Explorer and a Uniprobe on my X Terra 70. They both work well however the Uniprobe is not built as well as the Sunray.
Mine had to go back twice for repairs within a short time. The Sunray has never failed.
