F5 settings ???

New member
Hi all,

Can some one please help me with the settings on my F5, like whats the best.
To be honest any advise would be nice.

Many thanks

It just depends on the area and the type of soil that you are detecting, i live in California central valley and here i usually run about 65 on the gain and -1 to 1 or 2 on threshold.Sent the gain as high as you can with out chatter and do testing. Testing is very important in all different ground conditions. You must change to different setting and test so you get a good feel of the F5, its a great machine and the more you use it the better you will like it.

Stud I'm still learning and experimenting with my f5 so I can't really help you set yours up but if you take the time to go back through this forum you will find endless info on the f5 and settings used by differant people. just be patient and dont get in a rush the more you learn your f5 the more your gonna like it. best of luck to you!!

Look up the post here by Mike Hillis, he has some very good info in them. You need to read the manual with the F5 in hand till you see what the controls do, then place some coins and a pull tab or two on the ground. Swing the coil over them and see how the machine responds to them. For basic start up just be sure and get the machine ground balanced, pumping the coil and pressing phase lock button is easiest. Use the disc nob and set to disc out iron and foil, after you get some time in you can learn how to set up the notch, or use no disc. Set the sens to 40-60 and set the threshold to -2. Set tones to 3. Practice pin pointing with a target on top of the ground so you can see how it works, I find Xing the target is simple, quick and accurate. Only dig the good repeatable(in 2 directions) signals. These settings are just to get you started, now go hunt and dig all targets(that repeat) to learn the relationship between what the machine says and what the target is, be observant of the tones and VID #s of each target. Practice digging targets with minimal damage to the grass and surrounding area, always leave an area like it was prior to digging, there should no visable sign you were ever there. Hope this helps.

why is it that u only dig repeatable in both direction signals? i had a few good high tone signals today but only in one directon so i didnt bother diggin them. just wondern was runnin tres +1 and gain 55
