F70 stock 10" elliptical concentric vs. the optional 11" DD

Looking for input from all folks who have logged some hours using the 10" elliptical concentric that comes stock with the F70, and also then using the 11" DD on the F70. Can anyone tell me what they liked/did not like with both coils, and if it is worth the money to get an 11" DD to replace the 10" concentric? I have heard some pretty good things about the stock 10" elliptical concentric, but of course I've also heard lots of chatter from folks who LOVE the 11" DD. Some have said the 10" is deeper but harder to use in trash (makes sense), others have said the 11" DD is deeper, AND much better in the trash. Just wanting to confirm or refute some of what I've been reading. Would the 10" concentric and a 5" DD in your arsenal be a good compromise (thus having both types of coils), or would adding the 11" DD also still be recommended? Looking for all the thoughts I can get from those who have used each.

Thanks!

Steve

I will stat things off.

Can't say anything about the 10" concentric verses 11" DD, but that little 5" DD is the greatest thing since sliced bread. For me the 5" is a must have, even if it does have some problems getting the depth right on the F75Ltd.

Yes you are correct it has been my experence that I read deeper than the actual dept on coins. But for me it's not a big problem I have learned to just take off an inch or 2 and dig.

Steve,
Allot of people discredit the Elliptical coils. I like them myself. They seem to discriminate better and make most detectors more accurate.

Been looking on Geotechs website , thinking of trying to build a coil . Found this link to one . there are a ton of coils here , but this is one in particular , hope it is ok for me to paste the link , here it is : coplanar 150 pdf
looked like it would be something i might try before long . these look interesting .
I hope it is alright that i posted a link to another site , sure someone will tell me otherwise since i am still new to the forums here

here is the main link for all the projects avail there : http://www.geotech1.com/cgi-bin/pages/common/index.pl?page=metdet&file=projects.dat

the 5" coil is a nice little coil......but the 11" coil is by far the best "overall" coil on both the F70 and f75. It will give you great separation....while maintaining excellent depth. I dont have much use for the stock F70 coil....but it does get excellent depth.................especially in slow mode................

For me in my mild ground I get more depth and smoother running with the 10" coil over the 11"dd. Maybe it's the mild ground. I don't have the 5" coil. The 10" coil is great in trash too. Heavy iron trash drives me crazy with the f70 though. Thinking about getting a Tejon again for the heavy trash or using my 1236x2. Any advice on settings in the heavy iron trash. Using 2H with sensitivity 90, de, -2 threshold, disc 4 I just get tons of high tone hits. Maybe I need to turn the disc up.

Thanks,
Rick

Hey Rick,

I know this is a really late reply but may help others -- if you are experiencing lots of noise and hitting way to many trash targets try these setting -- Disc 17 -- Sens 50 or 60, really, your depth will hardly be bothered at all. I use tones 3 and 3H set thresh at -3. I have played with these settings, up and down and find the machine will pick everything there is in the ground as a target, but you don't want everything, so I find these settings the most productive. With the DD coil I still dig a lot of bottle caps, but you know, I am finding nickels like you would not believe. In my first machine I found very few nickel and now I know many others are too, but with this F70 I am hitting nickels and dimes that others are missing for sure. At these setting I have dug dime down 8-9" counting 2" ground clearance because of the grass. I did dig a dime all the way to the hilt of my digger, 7" blade. if it is there this machine, with a 11"DD will find it. Hope this is help for someone. I too was looking at getting the 5" DD but you know, the 11" DD separates targets within an 1" and seems to read through trash, but you have to learn to read it. I was just told that Fisher has a 5" x 10" DD for the Gold Bug and have just released this same coil for the F75/F70 ? I was told this by a Fisher rep. but have not seen it yet?

Man this is an old one, but a good one. Now that it is back to the front page I was kind of wondering what the width of the 10" concentric coil is? From the pictures it looks a little fat. That new 5x10DD coil made me think of how it would stack up to the 10" concentric as far as size. I am thinking that a 5x10DD coil would just about do away with the need for the 5"DD, should have better depth ground coverage.

Hi Ron, I may have spoken from one of the other holes in my head -- they do have the 5"x10 DD for the Gold Bug but I have not been able to find anything on the same coil for the F75/75 -- My conversation with the Fisher was a conversation of possibilities not really based on fact. It would seem reasonable, however, that having such a coil for the Gold Bug, that jus happens to be compatible with the Fisher F5 you would think it would make sense to do the same for the F75/70. So, don't listen to my spreading rumors on some speculation and possible assumption on my part. Sorry. But it would be nice, right?

I second that NE Digger. The 11"dd IS a fine coil. The bases are covered with the 11" and the little round 5".

dbax, no problem maybe somebody from Fisher is reading these post and take the hint. I am running a 5x10 on my 1270 and I hardly ever take it off, it gets about the same depth as the 8" and the ground coverage of a 10" so right there it pretty will done away with the need for my 5" and 8" coils.

But when you get into the F75/70 you are into a whole different bread of detector.

We can still talk and hope.

HI WV62, I was asked by the Fisher Rep to keep a lid on it, that is the new 5x10 DD coil for the F75-70 because he had spoken too soon and wanted to let the distributors know before the public, but I had already mentioned it and then tried to cover for him -- well, enough time has gone by and he told me they were going to release this to the distributors that same week, well, that was a few weeks back and still no one seems to know anything about this new coil except for the 5x10 DD released for the Gold Bug? I would have bought the 5"DD but waiting for this newer coil -- I am happy with the 11" DD so maybe I will just go with the 5" DD, a lot of the guys seem to like them for the tighter areas, and just forget about the 5x10.

I have the 11dd on the F70 and love it, I had the 10 inch on the F5 and it was a fine coil as well. I feel that the 11dd is deeper it took some learning to use it properly, I still struggle with it in heavy trash areas. I also have the 6.5 for my F70 and it gets right on through the heavy trash for me. The short answer to the question is the 11dd is a beast and can cover a ton of ground, with good target separation and id.

Just started (using) getting used to my new F70 with the standard coil. (Just delivered a few days ago.) I'm reading about the other coils that are available for this detector. I would like to purchase "one" additional coil... Which one should I choose, out of this vast selection of choices??? (I'm new to the Hobby - Had a cheap one , many moons ago.) Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated... Have a great day... T
