has anyone ever seen a field test on the f70? where do you f70 users run your machine does anyone use the sl speed or autotune

The F70 has been my go to detector for the last 3 years.
I hunt it in SL mode with the sensitivity at 60, the threshold at +1, and 2 tones. [at most field sites]
It has never failed to greatly impress me. I use the 11" DD coil and killer bee headphones.
If you want to see my finds I am Merf on treasure net.

It also does very well hunting in Delta Pitch---A toss up

thanks Merf, do you get alot of false signals in SL mode? don't you think the manual is pretty vague on when to use which setting how do i see your finds on treasure net?

Like any detector ---The better it is, the longer the learning curve.
After using it for three years I can pretty much determine the good signals from the bad.
I dig about 1 good target for every two trash targets.
To see my finds go to http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?action=profile;sa=showPosts
You will have to go back to about November as the ground has been frozen since then.

bstaehe --

I also have an F70, only have had it for a few weeks though. It takes some getting used to, it can be REALLY "chatty" and will "machine-gun" you with tones in a trashy area; cutting down on threshold, sensitivity, and using disc. can help that. I usually use dE mode, not sL, but I did use slow mode some this weekend. Normally I hunt in 3 tone mode, but have tried the others to various degrees. I do get alot of "falses," but you will learn in time to sort those out from the "better" tones. Does this help any?

thanks steve, what do you honestly feel about the owners manual for the f70? do you use the standard coil? I think i will look at using a DD coil. i"m just wondering about the manual, i don"t think its user friendly. alot of paper spent on nonimportant issues, thats it,thanks for your time steve, good huntin

I thought the owner's manual was FINE for getting you "up and running," but I thought it was really lacking in more "technical" info -- as related to your question (which mode and settings should you use in which situations). So, I guess in a way I agree with you. It was an easy manual to understand in terms of understanding BASIC use of the machine, but NOT for finding the optimal setup in different hunting situations.

As for coils, I use the standard 10" elliptical concentric coil quite a bit, and also use the 5" DD coil that I purchased separately. I like them both. I think the 10" is a pretty decent coil, but the 5" DD, while not quite as deep I don't think, IS quieter, and does well in "trash."

Hope this helps; if you have any other questions I'll try to answer them.

Hey if you are interested in the F70 then find out if someone nearby has one or if a nearby MD shop will let you try one out.

I've had great fun with mine. I typically run it as hot as it will go with either the 5" DD or the 11" DD coil. Best use and results so far have been with the smaller coil in parks where old coins still lay within 7" or so of the surface, this rig/coil combo really picks them apart easily!

I don't run in SL mode unless I'm in a rural or older/cleaner site.

Saturday I hit an old farm site and got a bit of jumpy signal but wanted to check it out thouroughly. It was on the side of the old drive opposite from where the house once stood. Taking the coil off to one side and swinging it at an angle I started getting a good repeatable dime signal so I figured there was a nail or some wire on top of the target.

Something I have encountered before with this machine is that it can read two targets that have some vertical spacing but little or no horizontal offset if you come at the target from an angle off to one side. So I dug down about 3" and found a good sized nail and removed it. Now the target locked on 96 and stayed there so I popped a large chunk of dirt up to make sure I would include but hit the target and out popped this very nice 1923 S Peace dollar!

Not that most other machines wouldn't read this target at 4", but the large nail above might make one guess wrong if you were to skip iffy signals and not further investigate them with some innovative swinging.

Elgin Tim -- very cool story and very cool find!

I still have a long way to go to learn to "pick apart" the good stuff from amongst the trash. I find that the most difficult thing to do with this detector, as it seems to like to give false high tones amongst the iron grunts when dealing with particularly rusty/corroded nails. I've been fooled so many times, thinking I had a good target near/under a nail, and thus far have never been "rewarded" on one of these types of situations. Your testimonial on the silver dollar is a great one, from that perspective.

I really like this machine. It is sensitive, and it really gets good depth. There is a learning curve, though -- as would be true I'm sure with any sensitive detector. I can't wait to start digging up the good targets more consistently (i.e. for my treasure-to-trash ratio to improve!)

And no decent videos of its functions and operation that I know of..bstaehe, the best advice on its functions and usage are right here in this forum, You will like it, you will find some great stuff with it, like what Elgintim posted...and your digging arm will wear out faster than your swinging arm.

The F70 has become my go to detector. Had it about 2 years. very good detector. I have seen them sell for 300.00 to 350.00. People think it is not as good as the F75. I read in a field test, the author said in his ground, coil for coil the F70 is deeper than the F75....A real sleeper.....Jack

Hi Jack,

Field reports are someone else's experience. I have not had the success with mine that the F75 guys have had and in clean ground, all other facotrs equal, will always turn to the CZ 5 if depth is the issue.

But with the 5" DD coil on, this rig is a killer for picking trashy areas apart and pulling out silver. The 11" DD is very good as well and it got me that 23S Peace Dollar but then again it was barely more than 4" deep.

My deepest silver has been 8" and only one 10" target so far, a crusty wheatie that barely peeped. But the F70 does excellent down to that 8" depth for me then it hits some invisible barrier. Target indication, ID and PP all are clear and good to that barrier but I've got nothing beyond that with of course the exception of large targets.

I've worked with folks with ETracs, V3's, MXT's, Omega's and done side-by-sides with my own CZ's and even my 1235X. I think I come in tied with the other high end machines for ID capabilities down to the 8" barrier. But the guys experienced with those other rigs can make the call on the target (good or bad) a little quicker and they can read a little deeper.

All that said I am getting silver out of ground with the F70 that the CZ can't hit anymore since all the easy pickins' are gone. And much of it is relatively shallow but stuck in the trash mix or on eddge or slanted.

I would ask the guys in the know here if the 10" elliptical has an edge in depth over the 11" DD.

The better depth between the coils depends on the soil's level of mineralization. Low/medium....go with the elliptical..........high.....go with 11"DD coil.
Although, the DD coil is far superior in seperating closely co-located targets in trashy areas, no matter what the level of soil mineralization. The elliptical will discriminate bottlecaps better. Although a couple of different scanning techniques with the DD coil will make it as effective as the elliptical with bottlecaps. Look up Monte's posts here on Findmall on bottlecap rejection. (Edge Pass technique).
