F75 acting up ?

Took my F75 out yesterday for the first time, bought it used and did good. 1Indian head 1881 and some clad. Done this field with my xterra 70 and fisher gold bug DP. The F75 air test about 11" on a quarter and my 10" quarter in my test garden was picked up with the f75 no problem. This detector will find a coin in the ground the same depth as it air test. I live in western NY and the soil is mild.
OK now the possible problem is after 2 hrs of detecting I noticed that between targets the screen will go blank. What was happening is when I went over a target I would get a signal but it would take 3 or 4 passes to get anything to show up on the screen. I was getting a audible signal. This was happening on an off. I even put a quater on the ground and after several passes I got it to stay blank for 3 or 4 passes, then it would finally came back on.

Jerry could it be nulling? I run the standard 75 too. The only time I find that mine showing no numbers but still having audio is after a pin point or a nulled sound. I usually run my set 87 sen, 18-20 disc in 3 tone De.

But I can't say that I have ever had the whole display disappear if this is what is happening with yours.

Thanks for the reply, Everything goes blank except for battery indicator and stays that way after 4 or 5 sweeps over target. It is intermittent but happened several times during the day.

I guess you have checked the batteries and that they fit in their holders tight and also that the coil connection is tightened down snugly. I don't recall that ever happening with my regular F 75 or my LTD. HH jim tn

But I also seem to remember their pics were cropped and not actually showing the blank screen....

Did you buy that detector new ??

Possibly nulling over large pieces of iron. My Omega will do that...but sometimes it will show a couple of hash marks..that look like....//

There's been several times in the past where a customer thought something was wrong with the display (going blank) when the machine was doing what it's supposed to do. I haven't got an F75 handy at the moment to check the details, but I'm pretty sure that if there's no target, after several seconds any information having to do with targets is supposed to vanish.

In Disc mode, although the audio and the visual ID systems are not the same, they are tightly coupled, and if you get a definite target hit you will also get a visual ID.

In Autotune All Metals mode, your gain and threshold adjustments are made to suit your ear, and the machine has to guess whether a signal is strong enough that visual ID should be displayed. So in Autotune All Metals you can hear deeper targets (weaker signals) that produce no visual ID. When you are sweeping repeatedly over a fringe target, you may think each pass is the same as the others, but in fact there is variation and so some times you may get visual target ID and other times you may not.

Since your comments sound so similar to previous incidents where there was customer confusion over "display blanking out", I suspect that what you are seeing is normal operation, the machine doing what it's designed to do. I don't want to say that it's impossible there's nothing wrong with the machine, but there is almost nothing in the machine that can fail in such a way that the LCD will usually operate normally but then occasionally for no reason disappear except for the battery indicator. The battery indicator is driven through the same LCD communications link as everything else on the display is, so if that link went dead, the battery indicator would also go dead.

Thanks for all your help. I just got back from a 2 hr hunt. Even though my battery showed 1/2 discharge I put new energizers in. It didn't act up at all today. I don't think it's the batteries but who knows. I did buy it used.

Thanks again jerry

Jerry .. remember it must have Alkaline or high end rechager batteries..

Also remember if you have just one battery go bad it will affect the others even though the battery indicator states otherwise. Changing the batteries probably solved your problem.

I had one cell go bad on mine and the machine would take several seconds to come on after it was turned on. I was just about ready to make the call to send it back.

Jerry:

Ran the f75 this morning.. Screen was blank several times in the area that illuminates. All went blank except battery reading.. Now by all I do not mean the permanent markings on screen..nor the illuminated little box next to the last settings I made..So all blank is normal if no targets hit............ All is well with your machine..

I just never really looked before to see..I hunt a lot by sound only..
