Farm finds ..... long read

I was recently contacted by a guy that just acquired a big piece of property, a very old run down farm.
Rumor has it that the original owner, a Confederate Soldier returning from the war inherited great wealth and purchased the land.
He grew corn, cotton, and cattle and employed 90 or so people year round on average. He always paid them with silver dollars until just before his death in the late 1920's.
The new owner asked me to search the yard area around the house first to see what turned up, he agreed to give me 1/3 rd. of the finds for my trouble so off I went.
Within just a few minutes of looking at the site I started hunting areas that lined up or came together as if I were the one stashing the goodies.
What I found was silver dollars buried in small clumps wrapped in waxed cheese cloth at various depths. It amazed me how well the cheese cloth held up over the years. Yes I had a camera with me but the new owner said absolutely NO pictures were to be taken on his property.
Now the kicker, the new owner has a real cheap Bounty Hunter but doesn't have a clue how to use it and has only been finding surface JUNK with it. He watched me like a hawk but I had on my headphones and most of the cache were 10-14" deep.
After finding 3 clumps of coins he asked me to STOP and divide the coins and leave the property, he wasn't even NICE about it. I could see GREED all over his face and the gears turning inside his head that... he doesn't need this guy anymore. Well, I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut and not give away any tricks of the trade either :thebird:
What he doesn't know is that I sized up a few VERY DEEP and LARGE targets that could have been burlap bags full of coins lying down flat. The rumors are that the old soldier had buried several burlap bags full of silver dollars on the property. Before his death he gave a map to one of the bags to his preacher and trusted him to dig it up,pay the undertaker and any debts he might have and keep the rest for the church.
Now if this new owner had at least been NICE about it instead of being so RUDE I would have shared some info with him but the only thing that became obvious was his greed.
Personally, I hope the guy NEVER finds another coin.
Oh yeah I appreciate being able to add these nice coins to my silver collection but wouldn't it be nice if people were actually good for their word.
Lesson learned, alway's get your agreement in writting !

There always has to be a couple of those guys around, epically when you go out of your way to assist them and help out. I also hope he doesn't find diddly squat and invests in another detector and and has no luck at all. If thats 1/3 of the finds you found quite a few. It would sure be interesting to know what the other signals were. Nice finds Mike and good additions to your collection I might add.

Nice haul Mike! Yeah that really sucks how he acted but you can console yourself with the great finds,HH,

Nice finds. Too bad the guy was such a horses a$$. Definitely hope he never finds another coin.

Mike,

I had serveral people approach me over the years asking me to look for rumored caches. Usually tell them that you never know if the rumors are true, and even if yes caches were usually buried in metal boxes or at least jars with metal lids. Usually means you would have to dig every big iron target and we all know at farmsites there are literaly thousands. I've never found one.

Hopefully he will have you back. I've got permission from several people who initially said no- they wanted to detect the property themselves. I've said try my detector. I run hot at IM-16; often 3-4 minutes of swinging the unit and they decide it's not for them.

And very good advice about getting things in writing. Never thought about a clause that both parties would agree to when the searching would stop.

My neighbors wife retired from the library a few years ago, I talked with her today. She insist that the soldiers family who inherited the property all lived out of town and did NOTHING with it until a few years ago. Then all of a sudden a survey company shows up and they virtually split the property in half to sell.
One of her friends bought the 1/2 that had the original barn and work shops on it. It was said that the old man spent most of his time there so he could watch what was going on during the day. I just acquired permission to hunt the area and was only asked to share if I found something substantial. Nobody lives on the property, it's only used for storage.
I'll take my bush hog out there first, do it in sections and take my time with it.
Now that's more like it. :)
Sometimes being in a small community where everyone knows everyone is a nice thing.

I hope you hit it big on the other part of the property, you really deserve it. I hate it when greed takes over a person. Maybe you can yell each time you find a silver dollar, and make sure he hears it. Oh, and remember, and be a good neighbor and wave and say hi. Now, When he sees you finding all that good stuff, I'm sure he'll want you to search his property again. Let him know your fee's just went up to a 50/50 split. He'll bite on it I'm sure. This time, get it in Writing. It will all be worth it. Good luck Mike, keep us posted.

...destructive vice. We all have to deal with this ugly thing now and again. I have always been into metal detecting for the hobby itself and never to really "make money". It bothers me when I meet people who think that they can get a metal detector and clean house.

Good luck finding the mother load.

And it had to be something we all look for too. Huge hoards of Silver Dollars and such in unknown amounts and who knows where. Too bad the guy had to be a greedy jerk! You do know now that the guy is probably going to get himself a newer and better detector to try and locate those coins now for sure. If I were you, I would go back and talk with the guy and see if there was some kind of agreement that could be made. If not, just mention that maybe some of the previous owners would like to hear about the buried fortune and that should make him think twice before you leave his property. Then he wouldn't have anything at all since everyone that is in relation with the old Soldier would put a claim on it. Just return the favor! I know I would, especially to a greedy jerk like that. I hope you take my advice and hope to see what happens if you do this, it might just work out in your favor! Good Luck and HH.

If you don't hit the MOTHERLOAD here, just take my advice and make the guy sweat a little. Good Luck and hope you find more than a few coins!
