I was recently contacted by a guy that just acquired a big piece of property, a very old run down farm.
Rumor has it that the original owner, a Confederate Soldier returning from the war inherited great wealth and purchased the land.
He grew corn, cotton, and cattle and employed 90 or so people year round on average. He always paid them with silver dollars until just before his death in the late 1920's.
The new owner asked me to search the yard area around the house first to see what turned up, he agreed to give me 1/3 rd. of the finds for my trouble so off I went.
Within just a few minutes of looking at the site I started hunting areas that lined up or came together as if I were the one stashing the goodies.
What I found was silver dollars buried in small clumps wrapped in waxed cheese cloth at various depths. It amazed me how well the cheese cloth held up over the years. Yes I had a camera with me but the new owner said absolutely NO pictures were to be taken on his property.
Now the kicker, the new owner has a real cheap Bounty Hunter but doesn't have a clue how to use it and has only been finding surface JUNK with it. He watched me like a hawk but I had on my headphones and most of the cache were 10-14" deep.
After finding 3 clumps of coins he asked me to STOP and divide the coins and leave the property, he wasn't even NICE about it. I could see GREED all over his face and the gears turning inside his head that... he doesn't need this guy anymore. Well, I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut and not give away any tricks of the trade either :thebird:
What he doesn't know is that I sized up a few VERY DEEP and LARGE targets that could have been burlap bags full of coins lying down flat. The rumors are that the old soldier had buried several burlap bags full of silver dollars on the property. Before his death he gave a map to one of the bags to his preacher and trusted him to dig it up,pay the undertaker and any debts he might have and keep the rest for the church.
Now if this new owner had at least been NICE about it instead of being so RUDE I would have shared some info with him but the only thing that became obvious was his greed.
Personally, I hope the guy NEVER finds another coin.
Oh yeah I appreciate being able to add these nice coins to my silver collection but wouldn't it be nice if people were actually good for their word.
Lesson learned, alway's get your agreement in writting !
