Fellows: What's the most dependable pinpointer?

I may get some flak for this, but I use the Treasure Mate (16.5khz). Made by Tesoro with a lifetime Warranty:clapping: I use my TM for detecting and gold mining. It does get one inch + on a coin in the ground. The only problem I discovered that if I lay my detector next to my target hole, my probe goes nuts!!!!!!!! I simply move the detector coil away from where I am digging and the problem goes away!
I have to admit I am looking at the Garrett as a backup.

I use the Garrett in the rain and mud then wash it off with a hose or in the sink. It is not water proof but will take a good dunking.

You mentioned the Detector Pro model Pistol Probe which no one has addressed. I played with one a bit and it has by far the most depth of any I've seen, BUT didn't have a vibration mode and the audio tone was too soft to use will with the headphones I usually wear and in my experience with other pinpointers, the light isn't always all that visible in brilliant sunlight. I'd go with either the Garret or the Vibraprobe.

I've used the Vibraprobe, Sunray X-1 and the Pistol Probe.

The Sun-Ray is convenient in that it is connected to the detector and can 'target ID'. I find that the depth is ok, about 3". It is very handy and quick for finding surface coins. It does add weight to the detector which makes it more difficult to swing for long periods of time. On occasion, I have forgot to toggle back to the main coil and hunted for a few minutes before I realized my mistake. Took, the X-1 isn't cheap, I think that with an upper rod for my E-trac it is by far the most expensive of those probes that I've had. Lastly, it isn't readily transferable to other brands of detectors for obvious reasons.

My vibraprobe was ok, better than not having a probe but my least favorite of those I've used. Depth wasn't very good, and mine required I tip it upside down to activate. At times, as I was gathering my equipment to put in the car to go hunting, I could hear the vibraprobe repeated turn on and off as it shifted around. It has the least depth capability of these thress which reduced its functionality to use as a surface coin finder.

The Pistol Probe, being a pulse detector, is very good at finding all of the iron and targets in a hole. It is larger that the vibraprobe and hangs from my belt. It wasn't until I started using one that I really came to realize HOW MUCH rusty iron was in the holes with the coins and tokens I was finding with the E-trac. It also gets very good depth as well making it easy to decide if there is something deeper in my hole (for sure) or if it has already been removed. The PP does interfere with my E-trac most of the time requiring me to swing the E-trac coil away from the hole I am probing. I can shift the frequency some which helps some. Not a big deal, but a little inconvenient. And with the PP, I have to lift one of my headphone earcups so that I can hear it. Again, not a big deal, but a little inconvenient. Being that it sits on my hip rather than on the detector help relieve some of the weight I have to swing. And being that it isn't detector dependant, I can use it with any detector that I like. I don't care for the plastic housing and control cover, it feels somewhat cheap.

I've not tried a Garrett Pro Pointer yet. I've heard that the are well made, get close to the same depth as the Sun Ray probes and are handy in size.

Regardless of preferences, I can't imagine hunting without a probe. To me, a hand held probe is a necessity for my type of hunting.

I have used the Garrett Pro Pointer for two seasons and have not had a bit of trouble with it. Batteries last a long time. About 2 - 3 months depending on how much you hunt.

I think the Garrett is pretty much bullet proof. I have not used the Pistolprobe but I have used the Pocket Uniprobe for years with no trouble until the last year or so. You have to be a little careful about pulling on the connector end of the cord, it may come loose. I've had two coil wires come loose in the connector but DetectorPro fixed both for no charge, no questions asked... and I had tried several times to rewire the first one making it a bit shorter.
It lasted for almost ten years with no problem though.

So, IMO the Garrett is probably more bulletproof unless the vibration works something loose over time... but the Uniprobe/Pistolprobe works better. The Garrett detects all along the side of the barrell while the UP detects from the tip and goes a bit deeper.
