filters on the V3

Hello everyone, can someone explain the use of filters on the V3 ?

Ground filters help the V3 find deeper targets in areas with high concentrations of ground minerals by filtering out the minerals. Simply put, the higher the concentration of minerals, the more filters are needed to compensate. Band filters also help reduce the amount of EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference).

Use caution. If you use too much filtering in areas with moderate to low amounts of ground minerals, it will dramatically decrease depth.

You should also decrease filters in trashy areas.

More filtering requires faster sweep speed, while lower filters allow for a slower sweep speed.

There is much more to it and I am sure more of the guys will chime in soon.

I always hunt in 5, nice and slow. And only come up if I have to. But I was wondering what is the difference with the "High" setting, compared to just 5,7.5 or 10?

I found that 7.5 bandpass is about the best for me. I got used to the 5 High and a slow swing, but the 7.5 works good in slow swing and a faster swing for shallow clad hunting. Kind of the best of both worlds for me in my ground. I suggest try them all and see what works best for you.

Can anyone give me an idea as to how slow is "slow enough" for use with the 5.0 filter? If you say the "period" of a normal swing in normal conditions for most people is about 1.5 to 2.0 seconds, what would be appropriate for a 5.0?

That will depend on your mineralization. For me, about 2-3 seconds per swing works best for the deep signals.

With the 5 band filter and recovery delay of 80 or higher,Ive taken my sweep speed as slow as 4-5 seconds for a swing in one direction with good results.

Thanks guys for answering my question. Based on what I'm reading from this post and answers to another one that I've posted regarding coils, it seems I might get more depth by going to a 9.5 concentric, a lower filter, and a slower swing, as long as ground conditions will permit it.

Maybe it's the ground out here in Southern California, But I get plenty of depth with all the coils I use, with the 5 filter slow sweep technique. the D2, Super 12 and my 5.3, I have dug dimes at 6-7" with the 5.3 and a bullet at around 9" with the Super 12.
I have heard alot of good things about the 9.5 and plan on getting it too. The V3 loves silver coins, I have found more silver coins in the last 4 months then i did using my DFX for 2 years. Hunting the same spots? My DFX is an awesome machine for gold
but the V3 seems to sniff out the silver coins. Speaking only for myself of course.

One last question, then. What level of mineralization is "low enough" to merit the change from the DD to the concentric coil?
The ground where I live is pretty mineralized. What reading would tell me that it's probably ok to make the switch, or should i just make it anyway, knowing that lots of people have been successful with their XLT's and DFX's over the years?
