Finally bought a V

After mulling around for awhile having a deal fall thru on another TID, I bought a V this morning. It was between the golden Umax and the V, but I think I went the right way. I liked the 4 tone feature of the golden, but after using a borrowed Cibola, didn't think I could go wrong with the V with the manual GB. Have lurked here for awhile and have enjoyed the knowledgeable post. I've used a GTI 1500 for about 3 years and had a DFX for about 6 months, and really like them both, but can't go wrong with 2.2 pounds after swinging those heavy machines. Eric

Good choice of detector.

If this is your first non TID machine you are entering the new world of sound. You can now pay attention to what you are doing. If you don't already own a set of quality headphones, I suggest you look into it. You need a set of metal detecting dedicated headphones with at least 150 ohms of resistance. I recently purchased a set of basic Killer Bs and I am entering a new realm of sound and detection. That is no joke. I feel like I'm getting it together and that's a good feeling.

You don't need to let clunky discrimination and notching to tell you what to dig. Discrimination can hide good targets and reduce the depth of detection on TID and non TID machines. Using a little discrimination takes away small rings, ear rings, toe rings, any small gold and diamond or ruby jewelry will be hidden from you. You need to learn to be the discriminator. It's a scary proposition but it works very well. It just takes practice.

They call us beep-n-diggers and I have come to like the term. I call them jewelery leavers and proceed to collect what they have left.

dont be surprised how deep the vaquero will go, no joke, it may look like a toy, but its doesn't work like one. with my Cortes i can air test on a quarter at 10+ inches and with the tejon 11+ inches. and that is doing it inside the house with tv's and every other electrical appliance. the weight of this detector will make it your primary detector wait and see. i dont know about you but i have tennis elbow and dont like to swing 5 plus pound detectors anymore. anyway enjoy and take the time to learn it. you will find the sound can tell you more than you can believe. good hunting.

If you don't have a good quality set of headphones for detecting, that should be on Santa's Wish List, as well as a smaller coil.

Everyone, Thanks for the good words and advice on the V. I have a set of Jolly Rogers that I really like. Hope they go well together. 6" of snow on the ground right now, but hope to take the V for a spin next weekend. The last couple winters here have been somewhat mild and I've pretty much been able to dig thru them. Looking forward to taking it back over some of my pounded spots. Eric

It's the audio is where it's at - quality headphones and let the ears work it'
I have TID machines but I normally have made my mind using the audio before looking at the screen just for kicks.
Earlier this year I tried the display to determine my digs. That lasted maybe a half hour - couldn't stand the thought that I might walk away from a good audio target. So I go audio, then if I'm using a TID machine, the screen is for kicks and grins. It can give me somewhat an idea on depth of coin targets.
I'm all comfortable using my non-TID machines and headphones. Done it that way for years. But have and use both types of machines for whatever strikes the mood at the time of the hunt.

It's a new world for me. I'm like a kid in the candy store with this new found knowledge. I guess I'm sounding off about it too much. Just want to share.

It's a result of listening to you guys until some things finally dawn on me. It takes a while because I'm thick headed

I have some exploring to do in this world of sound before I progress to a TID machine. I tried a couple of low priced ones but they frustrated me. I need to learn how to hunt proficiently first.

congradulations , i would have got the vaquero to but was to low in money love the silver , the reason i switched was the weight of my m_6 was like swinging a 4 pound sledge hammer the tesoro is so light i love it i found i did not need the training wheels of tone i.d and VDI numbers any moor and you can train your ear to disc a lot i know my band teacher could pick out an insterment that was out of tune as wee whear playing and tell him how much to turn his adjustment you could play a note and he would tell you what note it was just by ear you can train the ear yes im a beep and dig man now but im not biased against others i would love to get an x-terra 70 its just ive not the 700 bucks let us know how the V behaves for you i bet its a great machine

You will love the vaquero! Best all around detector that I have ever used!! Mine has paid for its self in finds this summer plus two class rings returned to owners/familys.Great machine. Good luck. Ground is solid here in ND ,can't dig for the next few months:
