Finds I got during the 4th of July Weekend.:detecting:

James N.D.

New member
Hello again! Back with another round of finds from my last outings. Enjoy!

Friday, I had the day off from work and thought about going out detecting for a bit. I didn't get out for long since I wanted to just take it easy and hit it hard on Saturday so I went out for about 2 hours instead of a full day like usual.

I did some hunting at an Old School Grounds. I found a few Wheats, a 1942 Canadian Penny, a Foreign Coin dated 1967 and a U.S.A. Pin. It didn't matter that no Silver was found since I knew Saturday I would find some somewhere.

Friday Night came around and Tim calls me up and tells me he is free to get out and detect on Saturday since his wife didn't have any plans for them for the 4th. So I went and picked him up Saturday Morning and off we went.

Saturday, we headed for a town where Tim had found some pretty good stuff at last fall....just hoping he didn't get it all and left a few for me to find. Tim had mentioned that he only found 2 Barber Dimes here but they were the Old Type from the 1890's and both were Semi-Key or Key Dates. One was an 1897-s he remembered and I had already found 2 of these before so I would have to see what I could find. I was hoping to find me a Key Date Coin here so I would have to see what was left. We finally arrived and started working the City Park where he had found previous goodies at. We hunted this for quite some time and it was worth it. Tim found a few Wheats and a Smoky The Bear Token. I also think he picked up a Rosie here as well. I got lucky and was able to pull an 1897-s Barber Dime with Liberty visible.:super: It grades a solid F-12 and wish the scans could have shown it. I also found a few Wheats here and a Kid's Ring with Megan on it.

Prior to this spot, we had stopped off at another Town Park and found a few Coins there also. It was a large Park but the readings were almost non-existent for some reason. Tim was lucky to find an 1899 Barber Dime, a couple Wheats, a Clad Half and a Mercury Dime. I found 3 Wheats in the same area that were recent drops which didn't make much sense. Some kid must of had them in his pocket and knew what they were and was keeping them until he lost them....only thing I can think of since the Coins didn't have any oxidation on them. I also picked up yet another Clad Kennedy Half (4th Clad Half in the 4th Straight Weekend), and a Silver Roosevelt Dime.

Awhile later, after finding the Key Barber Dime, we headed to another little town to see what it offered. We got there and found it to be totally gone except for 5 buildings. Neat thing was that it was all platted out where every house and business was. Pretty cool spot we thought but didn't try it since we didn't know if it was County Owned or Private. Might have to go back and do some asking around at a nearby farm.

We then headed to another Town which didn't have much of anything left in it. We stopped at a spot where the Old School sat where there was the usual Old Playground Equipment still set up. We started hunting and I got a Wheatie off the bat. I then decided to go along the sidewalk area to see what was there. I got a nice solid 30 on Digital but didn't get the Coin Icon. I decided to dig it since it was too good of a signal to pass up and at about 8", out pops a 1942 Washington Quarter. Cool!!! I then continued down the sidewalk and worked both sides. The sidewalk was about 100' long so there was a bit of ground to cover. After I got done, I had found about 10-15 Wheats and a Silver Roosevelt Dime. I started hunting the yard also and found a few more Wheats and a lone Injun as well that was in the same hole as a Wheatie was. Tim found a couple Wheats and a 1927 Dog Tax Tag from this town. We then tried a Church also, which was across the street and Tim found a few Wheats in the yard. I was able to find a Trade Token but it is in bad shape....which is really too bad since it probably was a really good Token to have since the town doesn't have much in it anymore.

After that, we headed out and got gas and tried a Fairgrounds. There was little success here and I was the only one to get anything Old from here. 2 Wheats was it! We then headed back....with a few Silver in our pouches and another fun time out detecting.

Sunday, I planned on hitting an Old Fairgrounds but that soon changed. I was headed there and found out that the exit I needed to take was the same exit as another spot I know keepers are still at so I decided to run over there first and see if I could scare up a few Coins and if it didn't pan out, I could run over to the Fairgrounds I had in mind for a back-up plan. I started detecting at this site and was about 20 minutes into it without a single Oldie. I come across a nice 28-30 on Digital that showed about 6" Deep so I dug a plug and found out it wasn't as Deep as the Depth Meter said it was. I opened the plug and dug some dirt out and out comes a Silver Washington Quarter that I barely nicked when sticking the Lesche into the ground. Good thing was that it wasn't a Key Date and my Lesche is worn out so it wasn't sharp to add to the damage. I then went and tried another section of area where I had found a few Wheats at, Merc's, and a 1899 5 Ore the last time I was here. I started hunting and started finding some Wheats again. I started to work it a little bit harder and more Wheats started to show up. I then finally found a Merc. I kept detecting and a few more Wheats along with a Minneapolis Token shows up which is a neat Token. It has 2 1/2 on the Front and then has what looks like a Date of 1886 on it. Could this be a Good Token and possibly the Date as well???? Then a Sisseton, S.D. Token, a few more Wheats and a Silver Rosie. I started hunting at 10:30am and decided at 2:30pm that I had found enough finds and decided to pack it in. I had found my 10 Silver for the weekend and was happy with that. I could have kept hunting but the back of my neck was starting to burn from the sun so this was the major factor for me to call it quits on Sunday. I could have kept going and know I could have pulled more Silver and Wheats but there is always another day to hit it again. It was a good weekend for detecting and at least I got the Good Barber Dime.

On Monday, I decided to see what the dates were on the Wheats I dug on Sunday and found 1 Good One in the bunch. I had found a 1924-d Wheatie with Full Wheat Ears which is a harder Penny to come by so it looks like I got 2 Key Coins for the weekend. I tried to post a Pic of both the Barber Dime and the Wheatie but the Scan just doesn't pick up the details that the 2 Coins have. I still included the Pics though of front and back. The Wheatie will be soaking in some Olive Oil for about week to see if I can't take a little more crud off of it. If I can't, oh well!, at least I saved it from any further damage from the ground.

So, now to the totals. Silver Count was 10 and they were 2 Silver Washington Quarters dated 1942,1961-d, 1 Barber Dime dated 1897-s(Key Date and 3rd one found so far), 3 Mercury Dimes dated 1924,1939,1942-d and 4 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946,1958-d,1960-d and 1961-d. For Tokens, I found 3 of them. They are as follows. An Aluminum Good For 1c In Trade / ??? & Haberman Genl. Mdse. Bancroft, S. Dak.Token, an Aluminum 2 1/2 / James Ford Minneapolis 1886 Token with Man's Face on Back and a Brass Good For 5c In Trade / Will's Place Sisseton, S.D. Token. Just wish the Bancroft Token was in a lot better shape! I also was only able to find 1 Lone Indian Head dated 1907 this weekend but that's o.k., I found enough Wheats to make up for that. Foreign Coins consisted of a 1942 Canadian Penny and a 1967 Suomen Tasavalta 1 Penni Coin. I also found one more Stinkin' Clad Kennedy Half Dollar dated 1972 and for the 4th weekend straight I have found a Clad Half......why can't it be at least a Silver Half for once!!!:rage: For Wheats, I dug another 54 of them. They are dated (2)11,(2)18,(2)19,(2)19-s,24-d(Good One),26,(2)28-d,29-d,(2)31,34,34-d,36,36-d,38,39,(2)40,41,(2)41-d,42,(2)42-d,44,(5)44-d,44-s,45,45-d,46-d,47-d,48-d,49-d,50-d,51-d,52-d,53,(2)54-d,(2)55-d,57-d and (3)58-d. For Misc. Items, I got a Copper Ring, an Aluminum Kid's Ring with Megan on it, a Bobcat Cub Scouts B.S.A. Pin, a U.S.A. Pin, a Plastic Dog which was in a hole with a Wheatie, a Key, an Old Barrett (I think that is what is was since it has a small pivot on the top and has marks on the back where it looks like part of a Barrett was that is gone now), a Silver Plated Earring with a CZ Stone in it and a Plastic Earring that I eyeballed while detecting. Well, that's it for the finds once again! Hope you all had some luck on the 4th of July Weekend and hope you all had a blast lighting or watching the Fireworks! Thanks for looking and as always.....Good Luck and HH to you all![attachment 132237 DirtySilver.jpg][attachment 132238 CleanedSilver.jpg][attachment 132239 DirtyTokens.jpg][attachment 132240 CleanedTokensFront.jpg][attachment 132243 CleanedTokensBack.jpg][attachment 132244 DirtyForeignCoins.jpg][attachment 132246 CleanedForeignCoinsFront.jpg][attachment 132249 CleanedForeignCoinsBack.jpg][attachment 132257 DirtyIndianHead.jpg][attachment 132259 CleanedIndianHead.jpg][attachment 132251 DirtyCladHalf.jpg][attachment 132252 CleanedCladHalf.jpg][attachment 132253 DirtyWheats.jpg][attachment 132228 CleanedWheats.jpg][attachment 132254 DirtyMisc..jpg][attachment 132255 CleanedMisc..jpg]

Here is the pics of the Barber Dime and the Wheatie I got. The Barber Dime has Liberty on it but the scan doesn't show it. It should rate at least an F-12 and is my 3rd 1897-s Barber Dime found so far with my Explorer XS. The 1924-d Wheatie will be soaking in Olive Oil for about a week or so to see if that will loosen any other crud on the surface. It has Full Wheat Ears on the reverse and again, the scanner can't pic up these details which is a real bummer. Thought I would post the pics anyways! Thanks for looking and Good Luck and HH to you all.[attachment 132260 MVCCoins.jpg][attachment 132261 MVCCoinsb.jpg]

Another amazing weekend . . . . . . over 70 primo coins not counting the clad, tokens, rings, pins and more . . . . . . think my buddy and I hunted as much as you did (2 hours Friday, all day Saturday and 4 hours Sunday according to your log) and found 1/10th of that . . . . . .

The Explorer is a great detector and excels in most areas we use them in but with them being out for going on a decade, not many areas around here that have not been "Explored" as Mike Moutray calls it . . . . . even he said that pickings were getting slim even after driving a few hundred miles and hunting for days on end.

You ought to offer classes since you and your group seem to be able to make killer finds every time out in areas you say have been hunted hard before . . . . . a lot of targets per hour are still turning up from 8"+ . . . . . .

Pretty impressive!

You always amaze me with the amount of silver, wheats and other goodies
that you manage to pull from the ground James. Congratulations on a very
successful weekend hunt. Hope that the olive oil bath helps that wheatie
even though it doesn't look that bad as it scanned. Continued success with
your future hunts and enjoy your posts. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

into a hunt and usually detect for a good 10-12 hours on Saturday so that is one reason I get so many finds during my outings. Sure have been finding a ton of Wheats this year and the Silver has been flowing pretty nicely so I just hope it continues for me. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your next hunt as well.

what I have so far this year and it mainly is due to sites that haven't seen a good detector on them as far as I can tell. Some sites have been worked with the lack of Clad so I'm sure someone has a detector somewhere but apparently not an Explorer. I have noticed the last 2 weekends that the finds are starting to dwindle a bit so who knows if there was only a certain area where it wasn't hit hard until now. Time will only tell and hope to get more goodies this weekend. Thanks for your reply and Good Luck and HH to you on your next adventure outdoors.:detecting:

Really nice finds, especially that 1897 S Barber dime and that 1924 D wheatie. The amount of silver you find is amazing. Those tokens are also really cool - I hope you find out more about that dated one. I don't think there's a book out yet on Minnesota tokens but believe one is being put together. There's a book out on SD tokens - contact Steve Miedema, PO Box 179, Springfield SD 57062. In regards to cleaning copper coins, I don't use olive oil any more since it degrades and can turn rancid. I usually use a machine oil (like "3 in 1" oil) since it is lighter and won't degrade. For really good dates (last year I got lucky and found a 1914 D wheatie) I clean the dirt off with some water and a little soap (no scrubbing) and let it dry for a few days. I then use "Coin Care". A company in California makes it (I think there name is BetterBilt Chemicals) and coin dealers or coin collecting supply places sell it in small 1 or 2 ounce bottles (this stuff goes a long way). I swab this stuff on and it helps preserve the coin (I think there's some silicone in it). I wipe off any excess. This can sometimes darken the coin but at least it slows down the corrosion and removes grime. I know that high end coin collectors use this stuff too since it doesn't remove the patina. Thanks for sharing your finds and happy hunting.

I will check all that out for sure. Glad you liked the finds once again and hope my next hunt is just as fun and rewarding. Good Luck and HH to you and thanks again!

Over all my worked out sites so we can find 15 silver coins.....50+ wheat backs.....indian heads......trinkets....tokens.....jewelry.....every week for the last 8 weeks in a row like you and your group.
Wish my sites were as plentiful as yours. You guys sure make some "amazing" finds.

It's all in the sites a person finds and hunts at that make the difference in what that person will unearth and bring home that day. I've been one lucky detectorist to be able to find such places to hunt at so if I can do it, anyone can. I do my research and this sometimes pays off but there are other times that it doesn't since someone else has already beaten me to the site so it's pretty much a gamble when you go out looking for "Choice Sites" to hunt at. It also helps when you do some road tripping as well.....nothing like hitting the road and visiting other parts of the country and seeing what is in that part of the world. Lots of cool spots are seen and adds to the memories while out detecting. I'm hoping to continue doing well again this weekend but we will see. The sites are getting harder and harder to find but they are out there, just takes time, gas, and most of all.....a little luck to find them. Thanks for the reply PeggySue3045 and hope your next outing gets you a few nice Silver's. Good Luck and HH to you.

Probably 8 out of 10 people on the form research places in one way or another, yet out of the hundreds of talented hunters on this form. You are the only one posting such "Amazing" finds. Maybe you should of written your own book :smoke: Even though i'm new, I have been viewing these forms for awhile and even noticed on two different occations you were able to "guess" the exact silver count you were going to find on your next hunt.. I think this is the part where i suppose to sing "Real men of genius"...NOT.. My daddy always told me if it looked like it and smelled like it, then dont taste it. And frankly this leaves a bad taste in my mouth and most likely others. Now of course this is just my opinion and i could be right. :surprised:

Once again you make me sick :puke: LOL Nice coins man!

I've been detecting since 2001 with my Explorer XS and have done extremely well with it.

There have been on occasions that I have called certain Coins that I wanted to find and later that day, I would find that specific Coin.....it being a Barber Quarter or what have you. I can't explain it but sometimes a person just knows that they will pull something good from the ground. Like Tim for instance....he wanted to find a Barber Half a few weekends ago and right out of the car.....WHAM! There it was! It's just plain ole luck and swinging the coil over that one spot where the Coin is that you seek.

I only post my REAL FINDS that I go out and bust my butt for and when I am at a CLUB HUNT that has PRE-BURIED COINS, I state that in my Post. I don't know why anyone would waste so much time posting FALSE FINDS since it would be a total waste of time and not worth it too me. I can't help it that there is still sites out there loaded with goodies to be found and if others did some research and did the traveling outside there normal hunting area's, then maybe their luck would change. I'm really "not here to impress" you all with my finds but to get you all to start doing the research and getting out and start making finds like the ones I have been so fortunate to find because the sites are out there, you just have to be patient and be the lucky one to find them. I also will tell you that I have TONS more SITES to visit yet since I have over 130 BOOKS of different Towns and such and haven't even read 30 of them yet to get the info out of them. Just not enough time to read that many books so there is plenty of spots left out there that I will never get a chance to track down and hunt due to this fact.

I know sometimes finds posted on the Forums can be sometimes a little too much and wonder if they are actual finds or just B.S. but my finds are always genuine and always the REAL DEAL. I know I sure wouldn't be wasting hours on end Scanning Finds that are Dirty and then Scanning them again after Cleaning them if I wasn't finding them. I've got other things to do with my time than sit here and waste time on the computer and make False Statements and Pics.

So what I'm trying to say is that if for any reason you think my finds are not the REAL DEAL, well then.....I guess those persons can always turn away at my postings because I'm still going to post them just because it helps others get out there and start thinking about other spots that maybe they never thought about searching and possibly start doing their own research and find spots like the one's I have found this year and previous years before. Thanks for your reply and honesty and Good Luck and HH to you out in the field.

Some people ask me if it's really worth driving as far as I do just to get what I get and I tell them....it sure is! Sure....your probably going to spend more on Gas and Food than the Coins you find are actually worth but just finding the Coins is worth every penny of it. It's always fun to travel out a ways to new sites and try them and you are starting to see that also. Thanks for the reply D and hope on your next hunt, you land some GREAT COINS! Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

I have some great hunts to my friend.I believe you worked your butt off for those items so dont worry what some people think.I video tape alot of my deep iffy targets just to stifle some people .I have a bunch on youtube under NiagracountyNy(my handle). You havde some great locations and you do your homework. You put in 10 to 12 hours a hunt(most people hunt 2 hrs and think they did alot!),you earn all your finds. You dont find stuff unless u get out there and put many many hours in.And the same goes for research.I spend alot of time looking at maps, and driving around scouti ng out old homes, woods, schools, parks, anything thats old and has seen people on it.I spend more time doing that than actual detecting im sure.Thx for sharing your finds with us,KEEP on DIGGIN!!

I'm glad you question my finds but you would almost think the dirt and corrosion on the coins would be a dead giveaway. BTW! What kind of detector do you use???

I see you registered on the site yesterday....and you have a huge opinion you need to keep to yourself id say.Sorry your spots stink or you have a junk detector you dont know how to use.If you dont think hes legit...dont read his post.Hes been here 3 years...you 1 day..cya!

I think some people just keep going back to their Old Worked Out Sites and think that they will keep producing finds which is probably the case with a lot of hunters. There's even hunters out there that keep working a spot if all they are finding is Clad Coins and think they will find something Old sooner or later but don't realize that maybe the location they are hunting isn't Old Enough for Silver Coins or what have you. I'm not really offended since I know that I put a lot of hard work into finding what I do and my Lesche Digger shows it. I've lost over an 1 1/2" on the Blade Length because of heavy use so that is proof in itself. I'm actually happy some question my finds since I would probably do the same thing if someone was posting finds like I was but those people that do question my finds never ask how far I am driving, what I'm hunting, or any other useful questions that just might help themselves out in the field. It seems they just like complaining mainly because they just don't have any good sites to hunt. Can't say it's my fault for that so if a person wants to find what I am, DO THE RESEARCH, DO A LITTLE TRAVELING, and EXPLORE OLD SITES that are NEW TO THEM. If your not willing to do that....well.....I guess this hobby isn't for them. Better to just go buy the Coins at the Coin Shop than detect at all. Thanks for the reply NiagracountyNY and Good Luck and HH to you.

I was a registered member since I didn't have a computer at the time. There is a lot of hunters that know I'm legit and my collection of all the Coins, Relics, Jewelery, and other finds speak for themselves. If a member wants some info on how to find sites and possibly increase there Keeper Count, I help them out without even thinking about it. I'm here to help others figure out their detector and to get them pointed in the right direction and then maybe they will post some great finds that they found after I have helped them. Nothing sweeter than seeing others find goodies after a little info given by me. Thanks and Good Luck and HH to you all.:detecting:
