Hello again! Back with another round of finds from my last outings. Enjoy!
Friday, I had the day off from work and thought about going out detecting for a bit. I didn't get out for long since I wanted to just take it easy and hit it hard on Saturday so I went out for about 2 hours instead of a full day like usual.
I did some hunting at an Old School Grounds. I found a few Wheats, a 1942 Canadian Penny, a Foreign Coin dated 1967 and a U.S.A. Pin. It didn't matter that no Silver was found since I knew Saturday I would find some somewhere.
Friday Night came around and Tim calls me up and tells me he is free to get out and detect on Saturday since his wife didn't have any plans for them for the 4th. So I went and picked him up Saturday Morning and off we went.
Saturday, we headed for a town where Tim had found some pretty good stuff at last fall....just hoping he didn't get it all and left a few for me to find. Tim had mentioned that he only found 2 Barber Dimes here but they were the Old Type from the 1890's and both were Semi-Key or Key Dates. One was an 1897-s he remembered and I had already found 2 of these before so I would have to see what I could find. I was hoping to find me a Key Date Coin here so I would have to see what was left. We finally arrived and started working the City Park where he had found previous goodies at. We hunted this for quite some time and it was worth it. Tim found a few Wheats and a Smoky The Bear Token. I also think he picked up a Rosie here as well. I got lucky and was able to pull an 1897-s Barber Dime with Liberty visible.
It grades a solid F-12 and wish the scans could have shown it.
I also found a few Wheats here and a Kid's Ring with Megan on it.
Prior to this spot, we had stopped off at another Town Park and found a few Coins there also. It was a large Park but the readings were almost non-existent for some reason. Tim was lucky to find an 1899 Barber Dime, a couple Wheats, a Clad Half and a Mercury Dime. I found 3 Wheats in the same area that were recent drops which didn't make much sense. Some kid must of had them in his pocket and knew what they were and was keeping them until he lost them....only thing I can think of since the Coins didn't have any oxidation on them. I also picked up yet another Clad Kennedy Half (4th Clad Half in the 4th Straight Weekend), and a Silver Roosevelt Dime.
Awhile later, after finding the Key Barber Dime, we headed to another little town to see what it offered. We got there and found it to be totally gone except for 5 buildings. Neat thing was that it was all platted out where every house and business was. Pretty cool spot we thought but didn't try it since we didn't know if it was County Owned or Private. Might have to go back and do some asking around at a nearby farm.
We then headed to another Town which didn't have much of anything left in it. We stopped at a spot where the Old School sat where there was the usual Old Playground Equipment still set up. We started hunting and I got a Wheatie off the bat. I then decided to go along the sidewalk area to see what was there. I got a nice solid 30 on Digital but didn't get the Coin Icon. I decided to dig it since it was too good of a signal to pass up and at about 8", out pops a 1942 Washington Quarter. Cool!!! I then continued down the sidewalk and worked both sides. The sidewalk was about 100' long so there was a bit of ground to cover. After I got done, I had found about 10-15 Wheats and a Silver Roosevelt Dime. I started hunting the yard also and found a few more Wheats and a lone Injun as well that was in the same hole as a Wheatie was. Tim found a couple Wheats and a 1927 Dog Tax Tag from this town. We then tried a Church also, which was across the street and Tim found a few Wheats in the yard. I was able to find a Trade Token but it is in bad shape....which is really too bad since it probably was a really good Token to have since the town doesn't have much in it anymore.
After that, we headed out and got gas and tried a Fairgrounds. There was little success here and I was the only one to get anything Old from here. 2 Wheats was it! We then headed back....with a few Silver in our pouches and another fun time out detecting.
Sunday, I planned on hitting an Old Fairgrounds but that soon changed. I was headed there and found out that the exit I needed to take was the same exit as another spot I know keepers are still at so I decided to run over there first and see if I could scare up a few Coins and if it didn't pan out, I could run over to the Fairgrounds I had in mind for a back-up plan. I started detecting at this site and was about 20 minutes into it without a single Oldie. I come across a nice 28-30 on Digital that showed about 6" Deep so I dug a plug and found out it wasn't as Deep as the Depth Meter said it was. I opened the plug and dug some dirt out and out comes a Silver Washington Quarter that I barely nicked when sticking the Lesche into the ground. Good thing was that it wasn't a Key Date and my Lesche is worn out so it wasn't sharp to add to the damage. I then went and tried another section of area where I had found a few Wheats at, Merc's, and a 1899 5 Ore the last time I was here. I started hunting and started finding some Wheats again. I started to work it a little bit harder and more Wheats started to show up. I then finally found a Merc. I kept detecting and a few more Wheats along with a Minneapolis Token shows up which is a neat Token. It has 2 1/2 on the Front and then has what looks like a Date of 1886 on it. Could this be a Good Token and possibly the Date as well???? Then a Sisseton, S.D. Token, a few more Wheats and a Silver Rosie. I started hunting at 10:30am and decided at 2:30pm that I had found enough finds and decided to pack it in. I had found my 10 Silver for the weekend and was happy with that. I could have kept hunting but the back of my neck was starting to burn from the sun so this was the major factor for me to call it quits on Sunday. I could have kept going and know I could have pulled more Silver and Wheats but there is always another day to hit it again. It was a good weekend for detecting and at least I got the Good Barber Dime.
On Monday, I decided to see what the dates were on the Wheats I dug on Sunday and found 1 Good One in the bunch. I had found a 1924-d Wheatie with Full Wheat Ears which is a harder Penny to come by so it looks like I got 2 Key Coins for the weekend. I tried to post a Pic of both the Barber Dime and the Wheatie but the Scan just doesn't pick up the details that the 2 Coins have. I still included the Pics though of front and back. The Wheatie will be soaking in some Olive Oil for about week to see if I can't take a little more crud off of it. If I can't, oh well!, at least I saved it from any further damage from the ground.
So, now to the totals. Silver Count was 10 and they were 2 Silver Washington Quarters dated 1942,1961-d, 1 Barber Dime dated 1897-s(Key Date and 3rd one found so far), 3 Mercury Dimes dated 1924,1939,1942-d and 4 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946,1958-d,1960-d and 1961-d. For Tokens, I found 3 of them. They are as follows. An Aluminum Good For 1c In Trade / ??? & Haberman Genl. Mdse. Bancroft, S. Dak.Token, an Aluminum 2 1/2 / James Ford Minneapolis 1886 Token with Man's Face on Back and a Brass Good For 5c In Trade / Will's Place Sisseton, S.D. Token. Just wish the Bancroft Token was in a lot better shape!
I also was only able to find 1 Lone Indian Head dated 1907 this weekend but that's o.k., I found enough Wheats to make up for that.
Foreign Coins consisted of a 1942 Canadian Penny and a 1967 Suomen Tasavalta 1 Penni Coin. I also found one more Stinkin' Clad Kennedy Half Dollar dated 1972 and for the 4th weekend straight I have found a Clad Half......why can't it be at least a Silver Half for once!!!
For Wheats, I dug another 54 of them. They are dated (2)11,(2)18,(2)19,(2)19-s,24-d(Good One),26,(2)28-d,29-d,(2)31,34,34-d,36,36-d,38,39,(2)40,41,(2)41-d,42,(2)42-d,44,(5)44-d,44-s,45,45-d,46-d,47-d,48-d,49-d,50-d,51-d,52-d,53,(2)54-d,(2)55-d,57-d and (3)58-d. For Misc. Items, I got a Copper Ring, an Aluminum Kid's Ring with Megan on it, a Bobcat Cub Scouts B.S.A. Pin, a U.S.A. Pin, a Plastic Dog which was in a hole with a Wheatie, a Key, an Old Barrett (I think that is what is was since it has a small pivot on the top and has marks on the back where it looks like part of a Barrett was that is gone now), a Silver Plated Earring with a CZ Stone in it and a Plastic Earring that I eyeballed while detecting. Well, that's it for the finds once again! Hope you all had some luck on the 4th of July Weekend and hope you all had a blast lighting or watching the Fireworks! Thanks for looking and as always.....Good Luck and HH to you all!
