FIRST 1700'S COIN

JUST GOT PERMISSION TO HUNT AN 1850 HOMESTEAD...THE ORIGINAL TOWN ROAD RAN THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE YARD..I FOUND MY FIRST 1700'S COIN..A 1787 CONNECTICUT COPPER..ALSO FOUND A LARGE CENT,V NICKLE,MERCURY DIME AND A FLAT BUTTON...MY BROTHER ALSO FOUND TWO LARGE CENTS..THIS PROPERTY HAS WOODS WITH AN OLD BARN AND A BOTTLE DUMP..CANT'T WAIT TO GO BACK TOMORROW..
 
Nice finds. Would love to see better pic of the front and back of the Connecticut. Based on the rather nice condition for a ground piece I think it can be attributed by variety. At first glance it appears to be 1787 reverse D or E.

Dang!!!!! I am just excited thinking about the potential of that homestead!! and congrats on that wonderful copper coin you retrieved:clapping:! We just don't get that chance for those very old coins here on the West coast (California). My immediate thought was to mention about going after any caches that might be there? Almost certainly there has to be a collection of coins either buried in the ground/fence post/garden area/barn/chicken coop?? etc. I definitely would detect the interior walls/fireplace locations. We wish you and your detecting buddies awesome finds!!!!
 
thanks for the replies guys..was looking at some old aerials of the property and most of the woods were farm field..i'm drooling just thinking of the possibilities...lol
 
It looks like you have a 1787 M.9-D which is a fairly scarce variety with less than 50 known. The obverse ALWAYS comes weak on these. The dies were cut shallow. They are also common being struck off center and with planchet cutters clips. Here's one from my own collection.

Looks like you have yourself a great spot. FYI, it appears you CT grades out as an extremely fine. Nice coin for the variety.
 
Jason - for what it is worth, my gut tells me the main part of that house is older than 1850. The addition may have been built in 1850... In any case you made a phenomenal find and a big congratulations to you! Beautiful coin and a fantastic location to hunt!! Hit that yard til' it bleeds lol - have fun - Jim
