First Big Find

Went out today with a cousin of mine. In the dark, with headlights on we did some digging. Found this Buffalo Nickel, and 2 Merc. Dimes all in the same hole! The two dimes are 1920 and 1926. Can't get a date on the Nickel though, it's really tarnished. First big find and I couldn't be happier.

The signal actually was not too bad. It was a solid copper signal, and then i dug the Buffalo. After we rechecked the hole and it was jumpy. But, still getting used to my new Ace 250 I sit it in Relic mode, so I dig just about anything but small iron.

Congrats on your first big finds! If you want to reall clean buffalo nickels (assuming they are not key date), soak them in pure lemon juice for a day or two and then, take some very fine steel wool and gently rub them. You may need to repeat the process a couple of times until they shine like new. Regarding the dates, if you want to find out the date, pick up a chemical called Nic A Date on line or at your coin store. It works great but it will leave a stain on the part that you treat.

Nice finds , well done

Seems your going to do very well in this hobby................ Congratulations !!

Just wanted to follow up to see if the lemon juice method worked on the Buffalo Nickel? Hope it did. Did you get a firm date on it?

It worked to an extent. However, a bit of a reddish film was left on the Nickel. The date however, I did recover. The number is kind of faded, but it seems to be either 1920, or 1926.
