First day out with new Etrac

Tired Rooster

New member
Well, it's been two and a half to three weeks since I got the Etrac. Haven't been able to take it out due to working too much. It's been killing me.....but it gave me a bit of time to do some studying on this new machine. The day today was beautiful. Highs in the mid 40's, sunny with no wind. So after coffee I loaded up the truck with all my gear and headed out to find treasure!! I went to an old 1930's school house that has produced some goodies for me in the past. But it's also been hammered pretty hard over the years as well. I spent about 3 hours detecting. Really just trying to get comfortable with and learn this new machine. I ran mostly in TTF and Relic mode. I tried the 4TF for a bit as well. It hits targets DEEP. I was really impressed with that. But no goodies for me today. I bet I dug enough old rusty nails to build a small house though! I have a lot to learn with the Etrac, but I can say that I like it!! Hopefully I can post some pics of some good finds after my next trip out!!

I think ..If new..I would run coin program and 19 gain to tell deep ones....25 manual sens......................I have been using a E-trac since they came out..I run a 13" Ultimite coil......................I love this machine.....have Explores and a 3030...but always grab the E-trac.......If deep...they do not sound good..sometimes...I have dug a bunch of older Wheats at 1-29..???......you will get to where..the sound just tells you to stop and DIG.....Pretty wierd the way it does it...but it does...take it easy!!!!

I got mine in august, I kept it simple ran the stock coin program, multi tone, conduct, always fast on, and man sens at about 24 to 26 or just about when it would start to false a little. Dig all high tones that will repeat, if you get get a peep on a high tone, circle the target and try to get it stronger there could be some iron or as you say or a nail next to a good target, 12/43 to 12/47 and 12/13 are the good stuff, but there is alot of coins that will give higher fe numbers at depth. I used the quick mask at first to check weird signals at first, if the target stays in the upper right portion it was a good target, those nails would have been in the lower right in quick mask. And you cant swing it real fast, I found slowing down helps too. I am not a expert by any means, but had a fairly good short season with about 50 silvers and 220.00 in clad, I found going for the clad helped my skills alot and built trust in the etrac. The etrac can be as simple or as complicated as you want and still give great results, this may help, HH.

I think that the next time I will stay in the stock coin mode and try that. I have read a lot about using TTF to find the coins that are "hidden" amongst iron. There is a lot of iron trash in the ground where I was hunting. I understand the concept behind using the TTF and relic mode for this......but I will try the coin mode for sure. Thanks so much for the advice. I'm really excited about this Etrac. Learning it is part of the fun to me.

You may be suprised at what you can find in conduct with the coin program, epecially if you go at a target from different directions and hunt the area from different directions, i have found a half dozen or so silvers with a piece of iron rite next to the coin, I also want to master TTF and plan on doing so, or trying to do so when the ground thaws. I want to go to a few places that I cant find anything in conduct anymore, and see if there is a few left that were masked by iron. I could be wrong, but I think TTF is a method of hunting that most people get the hang of down the road a little after getting the etrac, I know I am still working on it, tried it a few times, the etrac told me there was iron and a good target in the ground I always found the iron, but not the good target, but it may have been falsing or I just didnt keep getting the iron out till I found the good target, I can really see where a X1 probe may help find the target in the iron, maybe it just takes a little time to get used to, I wish I could hunt, got 2 inches of snow and 4 inches of frost, in N.H.

Hey Rooster. Stick with the coin set up/auto sens, until you learn the machine. Go low and slow. And yes TTF will find missed targets, once you get to know the E trac.

Get yourself a smaller coil and work with TTF in the iron, miracles do happen.....nge

nge hit the nail on the head !

Also, try running in Auto + 3 Sens - swing very slow and very low and ...
You'll find the deep ones that others missed with the big coil in clean areas and the keepers that are hidden in the heavy iron with a small coil !

Good Luck !

I agree with the others, use the stock coin pattern with multi-conductive when first starting out. I'd suggest getting the hang of it before trying TTF.
You might want to try and cancel out the pull tab area for the first few detecting sessions. But be aware that will also cancel out most gold.

My first few times out with my brand new shiny scratchless eTRAC were disasters. Made the mistake of taking it out to junk dense parks.
Dam near wrapped the thing around a tree!
Glad i didn't!

I would suggest the same as posted above. use the factory setting, with auto +3. from there, try experimenting with what you might like.... there are several Video's out there for you to watch, GL & HH, lookmforgold, aka DirtDiga
