First Finds

Hey all, got my new Explorer SE and spent the last 3 days searching my backyard (Northern VA).

1st Day - found all garbage and getting acquainted with the machine. This is my first time MD'ing and honestly I was happy to find anything at this point :)

2nd Day - A little better, found some garbage and 1 toy boat, 1 CW bullet (intact), 1 CW bullet (spent), 1 what I think is a CW button (can someone verify?)

3rd Day - Garbage and one 1981 penny.

Comments appreciated.

Thx, matt

Congratulations. You're doing everything right. Dig all repeatable and take note as to where they show up on your screen or digital which ever you're comfortable using. Listen to the tones and thats the way you learn.
AS you get more hours under your belt then start asking more and more questions about different settings. But for now you are doing great.

If you go back & read all the previous posts on users who are haveing problems learning how to best operate this unit & some of the different settings, You will find the learning curve greatly reduced...I've only had mine for about a month & a half...So far I've found 6 nice silver dimes, 1 Silver quarter & a handfull of wheaties...also lots of clad coins, pull tabs, bottle caps & curios & buttons...I'm still learning the different tones that different targets give but one of the first I learned was the high flute-like sound of silver...The biggest problem I had was solved here on the forum, I thought there was something wrong with my unit because the digital readout or crosshairs would seem to stick & not update...I didn't know that in order for the screen to update it had to regain threshold hum again. As soon as I posted the ASSumed problem I was quickly informed of the remedy....So don't be afraid to ask questions if you are having any problems...There are a lot of good people here on this forum that are quite good with the Explorer...TT...

Greetings Matt,
Welcome to the hobby:clapping: As tomtowns and NH Bob suggested, Check this forum for needed information that will ease your learning curve. The bullet that you have is a "Williams cleaner bullet" I think it is a type 1. That little tit that protrudes from the base, had a round peace attached to it. Some abrasive material was inserted between. As the bullet was fired the abrasive material would scrape the fouling caused by the bullets and powder. I cant tell if that is a button or not. Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage. (EX-II)

Thanks a lot for the friendly response folks; I'll be sure to continue reading this forum.

Something I wanted to ask as a person at work mentioned it to me today. He said becareful of the lead bullets as they tend to dissolve after some time and therefore a concern for lead poisoning might exist when handling them (e.g. be sure to wash hands thoroughly or use globes). Does anyone have any thoughts on this as well as any other "dangers" to be aware of (landmines/grenades notwithstanding) wrt to potentially toxic finds?

thx, matt

If your already doing that now your doing great and will advance fast. I dug mega pull tabs for starters over 25 years ago. Now when I go and if the area seems to be clean, I will still dig some pull tabs on purpose if that is what I and the machine thinks. It just confirms that the machine is working properly. In addition, this site really helped me when I got my Explorer.
