First goal of 2011 reached -- Barber Quarter

Hi everyone,

Luck smiled on me again at my little "micro-park". I had been hunting for about two and a half hours and had only managed 9 clad coins, 1 Wheat ('45-S), and 1 State of Washington Tax Token. I was getting ready to call it quits and decided to check the rest of this little planting area near the flag pole that I had previously found a Barber Dime in several months ago. As I neared the flag pole while working under a moderately-sized bush, my E-Trac let out a high-pitched squeal that made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up! The display was showing a solid 12-48/49 and my first Barber Quarter was waiting for me, just 3 inches deep. What a way to end the day--a silver coin, and one of my 2011 goals to boot!

This E-Trac is sweeeeet! :clapping:

Next goal: Seated coin...ready or not, here I come!

Thanks for looking and good luck on your next hunt!

Hey there cladiator, nice finds. The Barber Quarters are a VERY welcome addition to any hunt in my parts. If Oregon is anything like Utah for old coins, you did real well. As for knicked Mercury dimes, don't sweat it, part of doing business as a detectorist. At least you didn't knick the beard of President Lincoln on a 1931-S Wheat penny like I did several years ago. The good thing from that is It reminds me to be CAREFUL, but that one hurt.

I hate those TAX tokens. I have a jar of the Utah version of those. They always give me a false start thinking I found a silver dime.

Glad to see you getting out and posting some finds for the rest of us to look at.

Rich

Nice score on the silver ! Looks like your off to a good year.

And don't forget to post it here, so everyone can see it... I dug 1901 Barber Quarter here in NY, but the Mint Mark was not there... So it's still on my wish list...

Here it is... 1901 Barber in the middle right of the pic.... This is a day I'll always remember... Dug a Tri-fecta ... Seated ... Barber ... and a SLQ

Well Clad, hang it up for the year. You're done. I'm a little disappointed in you reaching your goal so early in the year. I mean come on....halfway through January???? :poke:

Great job! Glad to see you scratch one off the list! Looks to be in great shape too! Congratulations on the finds and the pictures! Keep'm'comin'!!

That is some fine looking silver, that Barber is in good shape. Congratulations on reaching one of your goals so quickly. Thanks for the pictures. Randy

Congrats of reaching your goal! Finding silver here in new york is gonna have to wait awhile as the snow is 2 feet high in some areas! take care.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the comments. I hope you all can get out soon and get some hunting in.

Thanks Rich. Barbers seem to be difficult to come by in my neck of the woods also. I seem to have more luck with SLQ's and Washingtons by far.
I feel your pain about nicking a special coin--I mangled a nice 1919-S SLQ several years back. It's a good reminder to slow down and use careful recovery techniques, regardless of the indicated depth of the target.
The Tax Token did sound just like a silver dime--and since it was 7" deep, I figured I had one for sure. That's ok though, it was a unique find for me (my first tax token) even though it is in bad shape.

Thanks Philo. I probably would have still been catching my breath had it been a 1901-S. Still, seeing that silver disc come out the ground sure got my blood pumping. Congratulations on your Quarter Trifecta--definitely a great day to remember. I'll keep looking for that elusive 1901-S and post a picture if I get so lucky...You be sure to do the same.

Thanks NebTrac. I guess I may have to reevaluate my 2011 goals now that I have an E-Trac--might have to set my standards a bit higher. :bouncy: I've never had so much fun finding nice coins like this before. I have a feeling this is going to be a very good metal detecting year now that I have this machine. Hope your winter is a short one!
