First Gold & Silver with CTX 3030 - Mini Review

I will get right to the point. I have been metal detecting 40 years now, and the CTX 3030 is simply one of the finest detectors I have ever used. I did two things I do not do a lot of these days because I tend to spend all my available time in the summer prospecting. I did enough of that this summer though that I was ready for a change of pace, and this last weekend stayed in town instead of heading out like I normally would. And hit the turf and waterholes with the CTX.

I have not done much coin type detecting to speak of for some time, and so only have dabbled with earlier units like the E-TRAC or Explorers. I think that may be an advantage now as I have nothing to unlearn. I am pretty much a newbie to serious FBS detecting. So I did nothing special. I just went detecting, and used two stock programs, Coins for turf, and Beach for the water. The only change was to bump auto sensitivity up with each use, and finding auto +3 to run well for me.

I have more details on The Prospecting Forum at http://www.findmall.com/read.php?27,1772392 since I was using multiple detectors, but I did want to break the CTX out separately here. The machine replaced two other detectors I had, the E-Trac (for turf) and the AT Gold (for freshwater). So I did some turf hunting and some freshwater hunting and I am more than happy with the results.

I easily found four Wheaties, a silver Rosie, and much to my surprise, a 1944D Merc in fairly short order in a well hunted park. The depths were nothing to write home about, which always seems to be the case here. Our soil is loaded with magnetite and I never see the depths here that get quoted on the forums. Dimes at 6-7" is doing pretty darn good. All I know is not too many people coin hunt around here these days as everything is considered

yeah we all know about the good things here,,,,,, if it gets out then everyone will buy one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,down-low !!!!!
BTW I visit your forum and swing a GMT,,,,,, have not had good luck on au but still trying !!!

Hi grouser,

I had noticed you were a CTX user gotta be happy with that. The GMT is a great gold detector, but as you are finding out finding gold nuggets is a real challenge. I guess that is why I enjoy it as it is that much more satisfying when success finally comes. Do hit the tot lots with it!

I am actually going to try the CTX out hunting gold nuggets in ferrous trash infested tailing piles in a week if it does not snow. Should be interesting.

yeah lets hear how you do,,,, I will try the totlots for tiny gold,,,,, I have heard it pays off !!

Great report Steve. I've been "around" the CTX 3030 for quite awhile now, and your analogy "target trace is as close to a coin fishfinder as I have had yet" is one of the best analogies I've read. Glad to hear you're clicking with the CTX 3030 on land and in the water. Nice finds. Thanks for sharing your pics and your "mini-review". HH Randy

Great report Good Luck I too love the fishfinder comparision ! Love my Misty (CTX3030) so I say you can love a thing LOL

Hi Randy,

I am sure your input had a lot to do with making this the great detector it is, so thank you for that. I really enjoy metal detecting. The actual running of the detector. Finding stuff is a bonus. I like being out by myself and just working the machine, and the CTX really gave me a lot to enjoy. Most of my detecting boils down to beep dig. It has been some time since I really analyzed targets and what the detector is telling me. The CTX has a very rich vocabulary and I just really got into it. Hard to put into words but you know what I mean. This detector is going to get used a lot!

Nice work Steve good to se you got out with the CTX for a little hunting. Have followed some of your prospecting stuff in the past.

Hi Jason,

I appreciate all your posts on freshwater work with the CTX. I read every one before I headed out myself. Thanks!

I saw your old post in a search. How has it gone using the 3030 for nuggets? I'm interested in the versatility of the CTX 3030 to work tailings and gold areas in my state as well as beach, water and coins before I purchase.

Steve, the CTX is awesome. Hopefully Minelab doubles the price :bouncy: Heading to Alaska for a 2 week family vacation in July, not sure if I should bring my Eureka Gold or make a gold search program for the CTX...?
Too many tough decisions.

Gday DigginVt
I use my CTX in the gold fields here in Australia and have done quite well, so far I've found just over 3oz with it.
My tactic is that I camp on the trashy diggings and search all day with the GPX 5000 away from the trasy area and then I come back to camp at night and have dinner.
Then after dinner I grab the CTX and search the trashy area with the CTX for at least 4 hours.

If you want to find nuggets with the CTX you will need the 6in coil as the 11in coil is not sensitive enough to find the small (smaller than 1g) nuggets that make up the bulk of the nuggets.

I use ether ground coin or high trash target seperation as the gold field ground is mineralized and ferrous coin dose not perform even though nearly all the trash is rusty Iron.
I have made my own dicrimination pattern by scanning 1000 sample nuggets from different areas to build a reliable pattern.
As the gold is mostly shallow in the old mulloc heaps (diggers piles) I do use recovery deep becase it amplifys the ground signal in the mineralised ground.

I am afraid I have not yet had a chance to chase nuggets with the CTX and not sure when it will be. I will be prospecting all summer but due to space constraints have to stick to my dedicated nugget detectors.
