First hunt with the G2. First impressions.

After looking at the G2 sitting in the corner for nearly a week, I finally was able to take it on its first hunt today. My friend Sonny1965 and I went to a park that I have never hunted before. It was a huge, nice-looking park, but the amount of trash in that park is amazing. This is as junky of a park that I've ever seen, and it has been hit hard for years.

First, for those of you who are thinking about getting a G2, it's all true. What's true? Every story about the G2's amazing ability to "see through" the trash! We were finding many coins that had been in the ground for quite a while, but obviously had been "invisible" to other detectors that had searched there. We both hunted this trashy park with the sensitivity set at full throttle! We both got a healthy bag of clad each, I found some costume jewelry (my daughter loves it), and plenty of screw caps. I turned my disc down several times just to hear the trash in the ground, and was amazed that I was finding coins right in the middle of all of the trash that was everywhere!

Second, the G2 is so light that I hunted for hours with one arm. I used my right arm to swing with from 10 AM until 2 PM before I decided to change to the left arm. Very light!

Another cool and handy feature of the G2 is the Gain control. I found several coins in the play area that others had been missing. These coins were lying close to the metal parts of playground equipment. I could hear that there was a target there, but being so close to the playground equipment made it hard to find. Some detectors had already missed these targets, but mine heard them. All it took to find them was to simply turn the sensitivity knob down until the big metal wasn't freaking the detector out, then the location of the targets were easily found. Quick and easy! No scrolling through menu after menu to just to find the sensitivity control. Just a knob!! Turn it up, turn it down - all in seconds!

My first impressions are great. This may be the best thing since corn bread! I had fun Sonny!

Glad you like the G2, it truly IS a amazing detector, the more you use it the better you will learn it's language..............MO

I want to add this to the post. Mark and I had owned DFX's and when we would hunt together we had to stay a minimum of 20 feet plus apart for the interference. Today we tested it out lest than two feet. Amazing ! I can't wait until the 5 " coil gets here . I was testing a lot of setting in the trashy park. I set the thing to a high Disc. just to see if it would perform like I had read WOW .................Quarter after quarter had been missed because of the trash. I am a believer ! I do appreciate all the constructive comments on my all metal thread. The all metal mode worked fine in the park today! I feel a lot better about this machine after today ! Sonny

Not only will you love that little critter, but he's find it so light and handy he won't have to switch hands all day!

Personally, I never hunt with my left hand. Just too awkward, for me, and besides, that's the hand I get dirty doing all the recovery work.

Let us know what you think of the G2 & 5" DD after an hour or two of hunting with it. Just remember, these neat little detectors don't work too well (for depth) if you sweep too slowly, so get a good feel for what's needed with the 5". That's my favorite coil to use on the G2.

Well I will let him use it long enough to decide he will have to have one. The G2 kicked it in the park today. !!!

Mine is on the way !!!! Thanks Bart for your help !! :teknetics::super:

I pulled a dime from the bottom of a hole today that measured around 9 inches using the 5" DD coil on my Gold Bug Pro version 4. I guess that I'm going to have to start carrying a shovel with me when my 11" DD coil gets here. You're right about it being able to pick goodies out of heavy trash areas. Mine hits really super hard on nickles.

Man, are you ever going to have fun!! It is taking me a little time to get used to it (I used the DFX so much), but the bottom line is that it is simpler to use, lighter, and has capabilities that sent me into shock. The depth issue that everyone discusses concerning the G2 really does not concern me at all now that I have had this thing in the middle of iron hell. Sonny and I both found alot of coins today that were not findable for many other detectorists (unless they were to dig trash forever until the good targets could be found).

The thing that got me is how fast I got a good feeling of confidence. Even when I was getting familiar with it and had it out of adjustment I was still finding stuff at a good rate. Then when I got it dialed-in, it seemed almost weird just how well it worked. I felt like I was cheating.

Will Doooo !!

Yep, amazing little machine!----We've gotta stop talking about this--we're going to have too much competition! ----We've already "let the cat out of the bag" about FT's "best kept secret"! :spin: ------Hey, it's HARD to stop talking about such a great little detector!!!

hi sonny!
did you get a chance to use the 5" dd coil?
just curious!..this is the kind of info i have been looking for!

If I showed pictures of the first finds, it might not be that impressive to some people (clad). However, if it were possible to see into the ground and take pictures of the trash that those finds came out of everyone would have to make a place for the G2 in their arsenal! Everyone go to www.bigboyshobbies.net now to begin your G2 experience (sorry Bart, I couldn't resist.)

Why does people keep calling the G-2 a little detector like it's some kind of fragile toy. The G-2 is a dirt surgical tool. If you want to clean out a place of clad and silver set Disc. at 80. Then if you think there is any gold go back over it later with your disc. at 40. What amazes me is the way the G-2 will find shallow targets where it is so trashy most people can't find them or won't hunt for the trash. As far as depth there is a big difference in the volume of a 6 inch target and a 8 inch. If you have headphones with noise limiter turn the volume up. And it will lock on LOCK on to good targets that are deeper. If I want real depth I get my ML but if I want to have fun and find quantity G-2 will pay the expenses. And I'm just on my 3rd battery.
