first silver of the year for me

Neil

Well-known member
Went out for a short hunt this afternoon, wanted to try out my new 10X12 SEF I just got. I made the mistake of not taking headphones, which I normally do and its really tough hearing all but the loudest of signals through the crunching of leaves in the woods. Got a good repeatable signal, locked on right about where a zinc penny would be, when I dug it out of the roots I couldnt believe this little guy came out. smallest silver coin Ive ever found. Ive not been able to find out what it is yet so if anyone knows please let me know. It kinda looks like a spanish milled coin but the letters dont match on the pics Ive seen.
It might be my oldest coin, not sure because a few years ago I found a much larger coin similiar to this one in design that is pretty worn but part of the date is visible and its 17??
this one is in much better shape and I will be going back with a smaller coil as the 10X12 was nulling alot but did hold a steady threshold and gave clean crisp signals. also found my share of shotgun shells:beers:

My guess is its a Spanish 1/2 real of 1748. Nice coin and a great way to start off 2009!

Mark

From Wikipedia search for "Spanish real"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_real

HISP = Hispania FRD VI = Ferdinand VI, King of Spain 1746-1759
Motto VTRAQUE VNUM =

1748, Definitely old Spanish silver!

Attractive coin, nice condition and stinky old. A great start to a promising year.
Well done Neil!

Nice job Neil!!! Looks like Mark is correct. We used to call these "Milled Pillars" in south Florida. This site provides lots of good info. You can also check out books by Frogfoot Weller. Continued success in 09'

The MO to the left of the date is the Mexico City mintmark. And the M just to the right of the date, is the first initial of the assayer. On the reverse, the two orbs with the crown above, represents the old and new worlds. The orbs are over the Straits of Gibraltor flanked by two crowned pillars, representing the Pillars of Hercules. The legend "VTRAQUE VNUM" actually means (one on both sides)

Hi Neil - Great find! Did you have some idea that there was previous activity there or was it just a random place in the woods that you detected? I'm asking because I have never detected in the woods, though there are some interesting looking wooded sites around here. Thanks for any info!

I knew there was colonial era dwellings here before but its such a huge piece of land its hard to tell exactly where. Im working the fields/woods areas when I can, its really overgrown and lots of the area is nothing but briars, stuff you cant even walk through. Dont know why the briars grow so thick in one area and more scattered in others, any ideas on that?

SEF coils are available I know from KellyCo. $169.95 + SH 14.95. Go to their web site, then go to the search box. type in 10x12 sef minelab, and it will get you in the correct location. They must have a glitch in their "search coil" listings, since you have to go to these SEF Minelab coils thru the "back door"

Probably to keep the best coins from being recovered. LOL!

That is one great way to start the year! Big CONGRATS from Seattle! (No contemporary dirt to that around here!) Enjoy and good luck in the coming year!
