Fisher F70 Settings?

2sikk

New member
Just Wondering What Settings Everyone is Using on There Fisher F70 ....Im trying to find the best Setting 4 Coin an 4 Relic Hunting? Just Curious I know all settings will vary depending what Type of Ground your Hunting...

The F70 like other detectors can be limited to in the high sensitivity and threshold settings by stability issues from EMI.
You mentioned two different types of hunting, Coins vs Relics here is lies a problem.
Relic hunters like to find all kinds of things that a lot of coin hunter call JUNK! Relic hunters like to find,
Belt buckles,
Shoe Buckles,
Buttons,
Horse Shoes,
Drawer pull knobs,
Car Emblems,
Bullets,
Tools,
certain nails,
Cans, bottles,
Okay, you get the picture.
Coin Hunters DO NOT WANT TO DIG THE ABOVE JUNK as they call it. So, the settings for the two can be vastly different.
For you I'm thinking that the use of the two storage banks could be helpful in that you could use say bank 2 for relic settings and bank 1 for coins.

Some starter settings for relic hunting,,
Low Discrimination (if not all metal)
1 Tone,
As high of a threshold and sensitivity as you can get and the detector still stable.

Coin shooting,
I like three tones (and I don't like nickels in at a high tone)
I may run my discrimination up above Zinc pennies and then notch in nickels.
For fresh dropped coins I would run a sensitivity of maybe 40
Threshold of minus 4.
For deeper coins see the attached air test chart. Notice in the chart where you see SL=XX its at those points where I switched to the SL mode and noted the difference.
SL gives you some boost in depth at any point in a minus threshold setting, but has little to no effect on depth above a (0) threshold.
So, you need to know (or find) the depth your wanted to search for the other settings. In a lot of cases 5" to 6" (actually in the dirt) is all that you need to get the older coins.

I have tried many, all seem to work but some a little better than others depending on soil conditions and trash and/or iron infestations.

Plus there are so many other ways to set it that work for many.
Just do a search for "Settings, F70" all dates in the F Series sub forum.

There is a lot of good info above.

The F70 is an amazing tool. Unlike most other metal detectors, it is overpowered. It can be so unusable that people give up on it. That is why I got my F70 at such a low price on Ebay.

I always do a reset when starting. (I am assuming you have read the manual a few times. If not, do it.)

Do a ground balance.

Set discrimination to around 15. A reset does that automatically. It cuts out the iron/steel objects. If you are hunting relics and things like that, go down to around 4 or so in discrimination.

Increase the threshold until detector starts acting noisy, then back off 1 or 2 numbers.

Increase sensitivity until it gets noisy and back off a bit to lower the noise. A little noise is okay if you can stand it.

Never touch Notch until you are experienced with the F70.

Now you have a machine that has to be one of the best in the business. You have taken a powerful monster and tamed it down to something useful and deep hunting

Read everything “Revier” has written about the F70. He and a few others have been my help with the F70. I am always learning something new about the F70.

Enjoy your F70. I have no need to upgrade to anything more expensive.

People ask me what detector I recommend and I tell them the Teknetics Patriot. It is the Fisher F70 being repackaged and probably the best dollar for dollar buy in detectors.

Well, I've never had to do a factory reset, but its a good option to have if you lose your way.
I like the fact that the F70 retains all the last used settings except ground balance, it makes it a much more of a turn on and go detector.
There is a couple of things about the F70 that's not in the manual, like!
SL mode's ability to boost depth below a Zero threshold, but not above.
And then the modulated /non-modulated audio is also triggered below or above the Zero threshold.

I think the F70 falls into the class of detectors people 'Over Think' I mean if your trying to reach DEEP OLD coins you have the
to run it at HOT SETTINGS!! that equals,
As high of a threshold setting as possible and the detector stable enough to operate.
As high of a sensitivity setting as possible and the detector stable enough to operate.
In the US old coins except Nickels and pennies are SILVER! pennies hold in the high tone range, so you can't really mess up the coin hunting
with the discrimination setting!
Tones are just an aid, there isn't anything magical about them, and certainly not the ability to put nickels into the high tone range, because it throws everything
else that's in the nickel range to high tone, so this is just a like or not like option, not deeper, not better, its sort of like, I like a Silver colored car, someone else likes the same car
but red.
I don't relic hunt, so I just skip a lot of variables already.
So, for coin hunting I just have to determine which of the two types I'm doing for the day!
Fair Grounds Fresh drops, Equals LOW POWER settings,
Minus 4 Threshold,
20 or 30 sensitivity,
speed DE (default),
Discrimination just below Zinc's and Notch in Nickels.

So, deeper older coins I just make adjustments to the above,
If I can't get the threshold to Zero or above then I'll probably use SL speed,
Sensitivity as high as I can get it without the detector falsing,
I'll probably disc out Zinc' and I may notch nickels in for awhile, but if I'm digging to much trash then I'll disc
them out.
I like three tones but that's because that's what I'm use to.

Great info on the SL/threshold relationship. I've got a patriot I'm getting to know and will be trying out SL on my next hunt. Thanks!
