Fisrt TTF hunt.

New member
So I was out hunting last saturday and was trying a few new (to me) parks with little luck so I decided to return to some private proprty that I have permission to hunt. The last time I was there I had my Vaquero and my hunting buddy had his M-6. We dug everything that sounded good above foil(very small yard with lotsa iron almost no non-ferrous trash.I found a merc and several wheaties everything else sounded like trash for sure. This time I would use the E trac that I have been using exclusively lately also I have been using the same set-up everytime out. Almost all white screen just black out FE 27-35, multi conduct, manual sens high as possible and platypus coil. This set-up has worked very well for me at most places(I have found more silver with this set-up in the last two month's than in the last four years with all other machine combined). My goto set-up was not working at this place,So I put on the x-5 coil and switched to TTF with a modified trashy park program.(open up the bottom half of the screen ALL of it). Then I just listened for repeatable beeps the TID was all over the place so I payed no mind to them. Almost instantlyI got only my second ever buffalo nickel 1929 and what appears to be my first ever war nickel. I ended up with the two nickels and 9 wheaties, very little trash the only clad was one lone modern penny. Almost no non- ferrous trash at this site.If the E trac in TTFsays it non-ferrous it is.The hopeful war nickel is badly encrusted I think the rest will clean-up just fine.I may just look like some rotten coins however the other machines missed them and a few of those wheaties where some of the deepest coins that I ever dug 8 inches plus in heavy iron. I will for sure use TTF in the future.(when appropiate)
Thank for looking.

Wow that's impressive. I tinkered with TTF a little but it seemed like it was falsing a lot. I may hold off on it for now til I get some more hours under my belt. That TTF seems to be a great weapon though. Congrats on the finds.

When you are in doubt about a possible signal, sometimes I use TTF to confirm there may be a coin in with a nail or something. Worked for me yesterday. It was a clad dime but I felt confident there might be a coin in with something because of the crazy numbers and falsing.

Good tip. I'll have to remember that. I have TTF set up on my machine in one of the patterns (or user modes... I'm not sure what the difference is yet or how to best utilize those options).

I'm wondering why you didn't open up the whole screen since you said there was very little non ferrous trash? I usually just use the relic mode when I hunt in TTF . When I hunt old yards I almost always hunt in TTF because of all the ferrous trash in them.

When I have a site that is full of iron its TTF all the way. I was hunting a spot where I pulled 9 bullets(CW) and it was polluted with iron. I went back and put the etrac in TTF and pulled out an old old pocket knife that would only give me a chirp when I was just right over it, but it gave me decent conductive numbers and so i decided to dig it.

Before I did I had my buddy with his trusty old XLT check it and he said it was just bouncy iron and he wouldn't dig it. 7 inches later out popped an old corroded and halfway gone pocket knife.

This just confirmed to me that TTF is the way to go in iron...the only way to go.

Hey robertj298 you are 100% correct I should have ran it wide open, and I will next time I go to that site. A while back I was loading patterns/modes and I decided to add a TTF set-up after looking around on this forum and the net I decided on the modified trasy park forum. So when I found the need for a TTF set-up in the field I just loaded up what I had and it worked so well that I didnt even think of changing anything. You are right though when in a low non-ferrous trash site running TTF wide open makes great sense I will try it at the same site and get back to you all.
Thanks for looking.
It should also be noted that the nickel was a 1943 silver war nickel my very first one and a 1929 buffalo. So the E trac in TTF gave me the oldest coins that I have dug from this site.

I've been running TTF for the past week and had the opposite experience unfortunately. Yes, it is pretty good at distinguishing ferrous objects. The problem is that it appears to miss a lot of coins. I was wondering why I couldn't seem to find a single coin in three hunts. So I took a small sample area around a tree where I finally found a wheatie using TTF. Scanned it and it was clean. Switched to conductive audio and multitone and blammo, got a silver and two more pennies (one wheat).

So I'm not really sold...

Well it is not for everyone or every site. What type of disc pattern was you using? Try it at a site that seems to be littered with ferrous trash.

Yeah....it's about knowing HOW to use it and WHEN to use it....just going out and coin hunting with TTF and expecting it to produce because it's what you read.....wow...learn the machine...then make it work for you.

I started using TTF this year whenever I notice my etrac nulling more than I like. Have had good results and will continue to use it in areas with lots of iron. I run it two ways. If the iron is somewhat heavy I have a program where I have blocked out 1 thru 7 on the conductive and just the lower right corner on iron. That will be a little bit quieter on the ears. If the iron is really heavy, I run a wide open screen. The stock relic program works well also.

I run mine on the relic program, and as mentioned above when there is a lot of iron in the ground...thats when it works the best for me. When there are more conductive targets in the ground than iron...like at a park or in your yard...then TTF will have you digging quite a bit more trash.

I have also found that the numbers you get are not always indicative of what's actually in the ground, especially the FE numbers. I have had FE numbers as high as 27-29 on a CW 3 Ringer which was recovered at a depth of 9+ inches. Depending on soil and surrounding iron...it can really throw off your FE and conductive numbers, so its best to lilsten for the repeatable chirp and concentrate on that.

I just loaded the program myself, I switched over to it in a modern trashy park, I about went deaf with all the low tones. Park setting was probably not the best choice, but I was getting a bunch of nulling so I thought I would give it a try. Like anything else I think it will take some time to get used too, but it seems like a nice extra tool to have.

I just loaded the TTF into my new ETRAC, can anyone tell me why my headphones and! the external speakers are working at the same time?
Just a normal coin or relic set up and it works fine......It's killing me!!!!!!!!!

I also think it matters what coil you use....I think the smaller the better...so probably stock coil or smaller. For example, at one house I hunted in regular mode until I wasn't really turning up anything. Then I put on my sniper coil because I wanted to get closer to the base of a few big trees... bam I found an 1800's sleigh bell and a few more wheats. I found my first silver coin in TTF yesterday. Was pretty excited. The best thing is to experiment with it and learn your machine and what works for you and what doesn't. Like everyone else said..depends where you are, what your settings are on your machine, the coil, and lastly something else to try after you have gone over it several times in regular mode. Why not?

I just recieved my 15 in WOT coil in the mail thanks Silerman. I cant wait to see how it does in these old parks bye my house. I believe that bethisa2j is correct in saying that the smaller the better for most situations however I have always wondered about these old parks that are 100 yrs old and you cant barely get a beep. I think that these parks have been pounded by everyone over the last 40 yrs including clubs that hold planted hunts at these sites. I have every reason to believe that there should be older deeper coins here. It seems that most of the signals left come off as deep iron. Well I am hoping that the 15 in WOT with the E trac in TTF shows some of them to infact be non-ferrous and even coins. (I hope).
Wish me luck I will keep you all updated.
Thanks for looking.

Good luck. What's WOT stand for?
