FLASH--More coil stats & a question--INTERESTING

Or at least I thought it was interesting! Two coils--12"X10" SEF Detech & 14"X10 Excellerator EQ Pro 12"X10" SEF Detech-weight 23.11oz. (don't know if that includes coil cover or not)-----14"X10" Excellerator EQ Pro-weight 27oz. (with coil cover), coil cover weighs 3oz. If you want to go by the old school line of thought, the measurements on these two coils should equate to 11" & 12" round coils. I've got the 14"X10" and it's a good coil-good on targets on edge (but heavy). Of course, we're waiting to see "whats the deal" with the 12"X10". Looks like the 12"X10" SEF is going to be about the same weight as the FBS 1050. I know we haven't got our hands on that 12"X10" SEF yet, but------------ Barring the weight factor, I'm wondering which of these two coils is going to be the best coil--and why? I know it's early on but what's the pros & cons of these two coils as you see it??? There's a lot of good, knowledgeable guys on this forum so c'mon you guys, let's hear a few of your thoughts and ideas on this. I, for one, really value your input. Take care, Del

Very interesting Del, we don't get the Excellerator coils here in Australia...
But I'm always interested in what's available, and how they perform ...:smoke:

Personally I've got an SE with the std. coil, also a Sunray X5, an X12, and an X1 probe.
Plus I have two Coilteks, ~ a Joey, and a WOT.

" I have only used my Wot twice at the beach, and prefer the Sunray X12."

We don't get the SEF coils here in the states. From what everyone says, they seem to be a perfect coil for the Explorers. I'm waiting for the new SE Pro coil to sell as an accessory item. Along with my stock Slimline coil (which I hate), I have the Sunray X-5 and Coiltek Platypus. I love the Sunray X-5. You can't cover much ground, but the separation is phenomenal!!! The depth is also much better than I thought.

Weasel, I agree with you, that X5 is a hot little coil eh !!!

Tell Detech to make them available so we can start using them instead of guessing at what it's going to be like using them. I have the 10x14 too and yes it is heavy, but worth the weight. If detech's is the same weight as the 10x14, than it's manageable, the question is whether it will be worth the wait.

When a detector is designed and manufactured I have read the standard coil is the optimum coil for the unit. Optimum I am thinking meaning (Best)....
My question is...if you change coils, larger, smaller, what ever you decide, have you changed the optimum operation of your detector.. Does it take more power to operate..a large coil, does it take less for a small coil?. Is it deeper because it's larger?. Is it more shallow because it's smaller...Or does more power go into a concentrated small coil. I know it's all in the receive so my wording using power may be off..But if you change it does it effect the output of the detector I guess is my question..How large a coil can a detector operate without adverse performance?..Theirs only so much expected performance from a certain output of electrical power.Example being if you use a power tool with a rated extension cord you get full power. You go buy a cheap extension cord and the power isn't reaching the machine for proper operation..How big a coil can the present power output of the detector put out before it effects the operation?..
Thank you for reading I hope you can all give me some answers.

Hi digitrich---The SEF Detech 12X10 is lighter than the Excellerator 10X14 (23.11oz. versus 27oz.). At least that's the figures I got-somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this. I ain't no weight lifter but I could manage the 12X10 as I can my FBS 1050 (those two coils, 12X10 & 1050 weigh approx. the same). I can bungee up and use my 10X14 during the time I'm using it. I'm just wondering if there will be any signifigant difference (other than weight) between the 12X10 and the 10X14---I don't want to duplicate. The picture of the 12X10 looks so "spindly" compared to my 10X14. Guess we can't have our cake and eat it to. Later, Del

JW--------Can YOU tell me the differences between the SEF Detech 10X12 and the Excellerator 10X14 EQ2 Pro coil that I just bought a short time back from you guys over there at Kellyco. Del

The S.E.F. or Symmetric Electro-magnetic Field coil is supposed to offer better performance than the DD with better ground balance, more stable operation, better depth and pin pointing, also the S.E.F. has easier pinpointing. I am waiting to try one out to see if it lives up to what they claim over in the U.K.

You are asking some of the same questions I asked when I was a newbie here. Lets see If I can remember some of the answers.

The stock coil will be more acurate on the depth display....when you change coil sizes it will be a bit off....The smaller you go, deduct 1" or 2"(can't remember) for every inch diff. it is from the stock coil. so a 8" coil will be....if it says 6 inches it should be really 4 inches deep?....Not even sure if this is correct....who cares I still dig .....

It does not take more power no matter how big the coil is....using more power will drain the battery faster...that is why I asked that question myself. The back light will wear the batteries down faster and so will not using the headphones....but coil size should not.

The bigger the coil the more depth you get.....according to all I have read and experienced.

The smaller the coil the better the seperation you can get in trashy areas...FACT! The depth does suffer....Fact!......I have a 5"-8"-12"-15" coil....in my yard, which is full of iron...I can only get a certain target that sounds like a dime to sound using the 5"...all others only hear the iron around it....so a diff. between the 8" and 5" makes a big diff. in seperation.

Every coil is designed for the detectors so the voltage and amprage will be correct.....any shorts in the circuit will fry something....but never coil size alone.....

Hope I helped some...and if I am wrong....prove it!.......

MATTOCKMAN----Are you kidding me pal? This ole Bungie's about bungied out at 10X14 & 27oz. I do appreciate your suggestion though---I think! No duplication problems you say, huh????? Hmmm-NAW, can't do it--too old!!! Del
