For fresh water hunting how many use waders?

I'm not a very experienced water hunter and have a couple of questions about waders.Do most fresh water hunters use waders.Can they usually extend the season or give the water hunter an early season start.Any brand preferred and what is the cost to be expected for a good pair. Thanks
 
How ever, many will comment how wonderful they are and the many years they own them. Still doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. Sure!! I only hunt knee deep near the shore.
But, if your water hunting you will end up deep in the mine.
Ron, I guess you didn't hear about the young X :usmc: hunting with buddies from his M/D club last year.
Find another way to cover up.
 
Hey Ron,I will be new to water hunting this summer but I have every intention of getting some wader's. The water will be cool up here and I just like the idea of some protection around me. Also I will be hunting in natural fresh water lake's,muck.rock's leeches, weed's. Check out the one's at Bass Pro shop's for about $90 they look pretty good and come with three D ring's which would come in pretty handy for keeping everything close by. Plus a big pocket up front. I wear a wetsuit. Waders can flood and drown you.
 
Chi Town Bruce, where was the X marine at when he tragically died ( I think that is what you are referring to)? I'm going to respectfully disagree that wader's are dangerous. Just like anything we do in life there is alway's some element of danger,car's are dangerous, cuttiing down tree's is dangerous along with thousand's of other thing's we do. We just have to use some common sense and know our surrounding's. People up here have been wearing wader's since time began as they have been all over the world they are safe and offer good protection when used properly. Good luck hunting the next time out. Gary
 
I've got a pair of the Bass Pro $90 ones.

I go detecting up to waste deep in quiet, still, not running fresh water lake beaches with them. I have not been to the Great Lakes and don't think I would go into even mild waves with them. I go into small moving streams fishing where I know (by probing) the holes are not over the depth of the waders. They are great in cold water. I use the wet suit if the area boat speed limit is over 6 knots ... or has just dropped to 6 knots. Boat wakes can knock you down just as fast as waves can. Know the area ... scout it first.

I will not use them in the water at the sea shore where the waves can knock me down when I'm concentration on locating and digging ... that is wet suit territory and if I get the strong desire to go to the shore and into the water when it is colder I will get a dry suit.

I did wear them once at the shore when it was pouring cats and dogs. I had a rain slicker over top and hunted the beach sand, did not get more than top of foot deep in the water. Did OK and stayed dry.

Have fun and manage your risks.

Bruce,I did have shallow water hunting in mind with waders,and I am alarmed about the risk in deep water.In Oxford those old blue water gravel pits can drop off quick.One lake I hunted in Holly MI a couple of seasons ago had a slight drop off,but smelled like a sewer when the muck was stirred up with my scoop.I guess it would be wise to remove waders in any kind of small boat even with a life jacket.Thanks
 
Here are the waders I use in Fl. , never in rough water. I have used them in rivers and lakes and some saltwater beaches with calm surf. I hunt no more than waist deep. I did test them in shollow water to see how the water would rush in if I was to step in a hole. The water doesn't rush in past the waist belt but it is next to impossible to swim in them and I am a very good swimmer. So be carefull when you wear waders. Gear box,the waders will protect you from the cold, pollution and broken glass.One great hunter who use to post here Allen From MI used waders.I would imagine the people who use these for fly fishing are aware of the dangers of using waders.This is one danger you want to be prepared for no one the job training for the use of waders know the risk and limits.
 
Ron here are the boots I wear with my waders, you will need a size larger then you normally wear. Just make sure you try them on. Good luck and HH.

Ron, Waders are fine if you want to take a chance. I have 2 pairs Hodgman Wadelites Boot fit and RedHead Bone Dry Extreme Waders Boot Fit . When I use these I go no more then knee deep and calm water. They have belts to keep the waders from flooding but I am still very causous.... I like the boots fit, not the booties then you have to wear water shoes and if the water is cold cold, there is a good chance your feet will be to, the Boots are the warmest. I like the wadelites the best, the bonedrys are for the Extreme cold {30 and below}. But are heavy and no fun.. I also have 2 Drysuits, which I got off of ebay, my favorite is my Mustang Survival Msd900. Check it them out used on ebay for about 250 when they come up under SURVIVAL SUIT / WORK SUIT. My advice for you would be to get a drysuit , with drysuit undergarment for warmth, Just make sure all the seals are good, and alittle larger for the extra room for what you wear underneath, they come with boots or booties. boots on are warmer but bit harder to get around in, the booties are less restrive but colder but use some Toasty Toes warmers and you will be fine. Although I've worn wet suits and dry suits for SCUBA diving, I now have a set of lightweight breathable waders with stocking feet I picked up at Sam's Club. Also use Hodgman Bantam Weight Wading Shoes. I limit myself to knee deep water but you never know when you'll step in a hole. Just to be on the safe side I wear a Mustang Auto-inflatable PFD (MD3087). Lightweight and comforting to have on. Didn't use a PFD before but some of the posts on the forums got my attention. HH

Jackalope,usually Sam Clubs have some pretty good deals.I agree precautions should be taken on safety.
 
when it is to cold for shorts i use a dry suit for fishing.it looks like bib overalls but with boots attached,then i put my water shoes on.if i tip over i stay dry from the neck down and i float.
