Found A 1783 Silver Coin Today !

I wanted to go out for a short hunt after work tonight - but I only had about an hour till dinner - so I decided to go back to where the 1800's cabin was on our farm.
The cabin's been gone for years and the cellar hole - if there ever was one - has been filled in.
All that remains now is a few cut sandstones scattered around here and there. There's tons of iron on this site so I was running in Two Tone Ferrous.
I've made some nice finds at this location In the past ... a 1857 Half Dime - 1904 Barber Dime - Sterling Silver Ring with a large purple stone in it - several old Buttons and a Sewing Thimble.

Wondering if something could have washed down hill - I decided to hunt on the slope that runs along the old driveway to the cabin.
I had only walked about ten feet when I got a solid FE 12 - CO 39/40 - thinking possibly a Two Cent coin here ?
Dug real wide - approx. 6" down - I spotted silver in the bottom of the hole - thought it was a Barber Dime at first - my reading glasses were in the truck - after a closer look - oh wow ... looks like a silver religious medallion - cool !
Got back to the truck - put my glasses on - to say the least - I freaked out when read the date and realized what it was :surprised: !!!

From what I've read - this coin is a Spanish - Half Reale - it's the same size as a Dime.
The third photo I posted here is of a larger coin - probably an 8 Reale - but the date and the markings are the same.

thanks for the story. beautiful coin! How can you imagine it got there?

Bilko - I was thinking about how a coin that old got there myself.
Near as I can figure - the cabin was lived in from around the Civil War era - 1860's to maybe as late as the very early 1900's.
This means that a coin from 1783 - was very old when it was lost !
I'm trying to contact some of the family members - probably the Great Grand Children of the people that lived there.
Going from the 1874 map I have of this area - I do know that their last name was "Amos" and that there are a few people living in this area with that last name.
It would be nice to know a little family history and to find out what time period thecabin was actually lived in.

WoW! You knocked it out of the ball park with that one . Way to go!

Nice find Mark:clapping:

That gives me hope that I can break into the 1700's here in Northern Indiana, but for now I'll suffer with the 1800's finds:lol:
