Found A 1897 Centennial Medallion Today

Last year a friend of ours told about an old abandoned house that's way back in the woods. He said that he and his friends would hike back to this house when they were kids - he's about 40 now.
I decided to try to find remains of the old house after work today. After walking for about 25 minutes - I was standing in front of an intact six course high - cut sandstone foundation - that was really in the middle of no where. The house itself is gone - only the stones are there. There are also the remains of three other smaller out buildings.

After hunting for two hours - I could not find one coin - but I did find this medallion - thought it was a kid's Sheriff's badge when I dug it up.
This piece measures 1 1/2" in diameter and The lettering on it reads ... " Jefferson County Centennial - Steubenville, O - 1897 ".

A little research told me that Jefferson County, Ohio was founded in 1797.

It's really nice to find a commemorative piece like this with a date on it.
I'm sure there's some good old coins at this location - looks like Large Cent & Barber country to me!
I plan on going back again in the near future - but only when I can spend the entire day there.

Mark, that is the kind of find that is fun, if you are like me you can't wait to get home and do the research and find out all you can about it. Good luck with the spot. -- Randy

Very fun find Mark! Thanks for the picture and I hope you're able to find some old coins there.

My daughter was looking at this piece last night - she thought that it could be a Badge and not a Medallion - looks like it had a steel pin going from one side to another on the top - just like a badge - like on a broach or other piece of jewelry - and the one ear was broken when I found it.
So ... our guess is - that this "Badge" type commemorative piece was made to be worn on a Jacket, Shash,Hat, etc.?
