found silver.... but too late.

Hit an old fairground this weekend. Didn't expect to find much so was surprised when I got a barber dime only about 2 inches deep. Near the end of the day I found another at about 3 inches. Figured there were more so went again sunday. After about 8 hours and 100 holes later I had 2 more. Plus a lot of junk. I think I found enough modern coins to pay for my gas though.

But here's the kicker. After about 3 hours into the hunt sunday I found my first barber for the day and a little while later a car pulls up and the guy asks how I'm doing. I show him the dime. I told him it was a lot of work but finding an old silver coin makes my day. Then he said that he used to detect the park years ago. And he had found THOUSANDS of coins. Lots of silver and hundreds of indian heads. Even 2 silver half dollars in the same hole. Not sure if he was exaggerating or not but after some small talk about all the pull tabs he found and a brief description of my ET I said "Well, thanks for clearing out most of the pull tabs but you left a few. And you made it pretty darn hard to find silver these days."

Wow. What it must have been like to detect when you could find coins like that. I guess I got into the hobby too late. All you old timers (I know your out there) must miss those days. I'd give up an arm (my non detecting left one) to find an old park that hasn't been detected and find thousands (or even dozens) of old coins.

If you are interested I'll tell you about the other guy that came up to me later and told be about a man that used to detect the park years ago. For now, here is a pic of the meager silver I found this weekend. Don't think there is enough room to post a pic of the junk I found. Hey, I'm still trying to learn the sounds of the ET. But as a relative newcomer to the hobby I guess I can say that any day I find old silver, even one, is a good day. I thank you old timers for leaving me a couple for the ET to find.

Bruce, I had a similar experience a couple of years back at an old lakeside park in Ohio. A fellow stopped me and told me of finding a cigar box of silver coins in the 70's with a detector he called a "total response detector" I asked him what that was and he said it beeped at all metals, little or no disc. I wish I could have had those kind of days, but if I had experienced it I problably would not be in the hobby today. I must hunt about 8 hours to find one silver coin, but it is still a great time. R.L.

Hey them are some Nice coins! Sounds like you are getting that machine down :) I guess it wouldnt be as fun if every other coin we dug was silver...wouldnt be exciting after awhile..This is kinda like winning a mini lottery when we get one now ,we really appreciate it :) Thx for posting your pics.

Ya, I'm getting better with my machine but it would be nice to find more than 1 or 2 silvers in an all day hunt. Most days I don't find any silver. I am surprised by all the old timers that are still detecting. But it's a fun hobby and finding a rare or key date coin is always nice no matter how long you have been at it. I also enjoy finding interesting non coin items. But I don't think I would get bored finding enough silver to fill up a couple cigar boxes.

Although I am glad I don't have to use a "total response detector". With so little silver to find today I wouldn't enjoy the hobby for long digging every beep. I'll settle for a couple silvers and I'll call it a good day of detecting.

Here in Aussie one of the first parks I went to was almost untouched. I say almost because where the modern activity is it had been hammered.......but the unpopular part of the park was packed with coins. I've pulled out roughly 400-500 old aussie pre-decimal and late 1800s UK coins to date with very little modern rubbish in the way. I still go back every now and then and get a few, but the coins are few and far between now!

I did'nt realise how good that park was until I started trying other parks.

I pulled about 50 silvers from one park. It consisted of dimes, quarters (just one barber, a 1900) and Franklin/Walking Liberty halves. Also found a few gold and silver rings. I would love to go back to that park but it was sold and some homes were built there. There are still some areas where one could hunt but getting permission is just about impossible, I have tried and it has always been NO....Maybe if the land ever changes hands the answer might be different, I just know there are still many silvers there that are been masked, the Etrac would surely shine there. HH John

BTW, there area where this park used to be was part of an old 1850's Plantation where the old house used to sit, lots of history there.
