Found the NICEST condition Barber dime in all my years of hunting!

I hit another beat up park...and it was beat up back in the 80's...so you can imagine how depleted it is now. I'm now 44 and this is the FIRST silver coin I have ever gotten out of there! I have found two high $$ key date indian heads there over the years...but no silver until yesterday. I always take friends and family there to hunt. Yesterday I took my fiance and her son there as we were trying out her new classic ID with Mr. Bill mods we picked up from one of the forums. This Barber was right on the brink of detection ID capabilities at this ground and was at least 8" +....probably 9". It was at least an inch or two more over the lip on my Lesche digger which I believe is 7".
I got good tones on my SE running in conduct with the gain high and sensitivity at auto 26. The sound would be good..then cut out...good ...then cut out as I circled the hole...and the cursor bounced from top right to middle top.
This is a tell tale sign of possible silver at the brink of being undetectable or ID'ed as iron. We've all read the posts on the forums and all know to dig "iffy" signals when in doubt. Yes it's a nail many times...and maybe 90% of the time...but this one time out of 10 it was this gorgeous 1892 Barber that looks like somebody got it from the bank in 1892...then dropped it 5 minutes later...where it sat for the next 115 years until I popped it out of the ground. I've never found a barber that you could see every line of every detail as usually they are worn so thin..but not this one. All I did was run warm water over it and it looks like this!
No it's not a key date or a super valuable find..but the feeling I had and look on my face when I plucked it from the soil and saw what it was and the condition it was is in...is something I will never forget.

Byrce,

At that depth you were probably right on the cusp of where the explorer could still barely ID the dime. Will detect deeper but everything sounds like iron. Then again could have been a nail nearby. Only one way to find out.

I have a 1900 that nice. Wish it was one of the rarer dates but still is nice to have a mint state coin to compare with the others.

Your right Bryce, that Barber is a beauty!!!

Got one a few years back that looked like it came from the mint!
Almost looked triple stamped it had so much detail to it!
All I did was wash it off with Soap and water also!
You can still see MINT LUSTER on the dang thing!
A.N.A.C.S. Grader said if He would have not looked at it under the scope and seen the Hair line scratches from being in the ground he would have called it M.S.64 or better !
Keep it up there are More DEEP ones where that came from!!!

I probably would not have dug that signal if it wasn't for you showing me what to look for and listen for at Forest Park last Wednesday.
I remember the sound and movement of the cursor when you found that penny and called me over to check the signal. THANK YOU!

I am actually comfortable hunting in either conduct or ferrous...depending on the soil conditions. If there's not tons of iron in the ground...then I go conduct. If there is a lot of nulling due to iron content then I run ferrous wide open. I'm just beginning to touch the tip of what the SE can do and have a long way to go. The capabilities of the SE are endless if one takes the time to learn and listen. Thanks for all your tips too...I have put them to use.

Kudos on the nice coin. It doesn't have to be a rare date to be of value to the finder. Definitely a keeper...

I have found a couple REAL HIGH GRADE Barbers over the last couple years but they are few and far between. Most are like what you said "worn so thin" but at least its still Silver and Barber to boot. Very Nice Barber Dime and I would work to death that Park. Too bad I live so far away or I would hook up with you and show you some demonstrations of what you should be looking for in Tones and ID's for those Ultra Deep Targets. Should be more Silver Hiding Deep! Good Luck and HH.

all it takes is patience and getting to know the machine. I feel I'm just beginning to touch the tip of the capabilities the SE has.

I have never come close to 300 silver in a year,..but I have found 50 in a month before. Those days are long gone for me though in this area. I now take more pride in going back to those same "hunted out" sites and trying and trying until I pull a silver coin out.
Virgin sites are all in the research...and I haven't found any around here. It's still a thrill for me though to find just one silver coin every couple of hunts. I'm content with that.
The key is research and getting to know your machine. You WILL start finding more silver.

That's an awfully nice barber, and in much better than average condition.

Believe it or not, the first barber I ever dug was even less worn than yours. Probably about on par with the one golddigger posted. It was a later one though, a 1913. Yours is only a year off being a seated.

Maybe I'll get around to posting a pic.

a WOT coil and see what happens. Around here the 5 to 10 silver days ended 20 years ago. I'm happy with just one every two or three hunts any more. I do now feel there are some definate goodies at this pounded park but are probably an inch or 2 beyond the ID capabilities of my SE. I'm thinkin' the WOT just might make them stick there little heads up. I've never tried a WOT but have been really thinking about it recently.

The soil has been kind to all three of the best coins I've gotten from there. I did pull two indians out of there too in different years and BOTH were key dates and BOTH looked brand new. Now this sweet dime. I always go to to the park when I go back to my hometown....heck ...it's the only place to hunt there!!
