Frustrating day

Dad and I went to a park yesterday for a few hours to see how much we could find with the time we had. The hunt started off okay, but quickly started to go downhill. Within about 15 minutes of us being there a group of about 8 girls showed up and started to play on the nearby swings. Ages 3-8. At first they asked the typical questions and then they went on with what they were doing. But after about 10 minutes they came back to see what I was finding. I told them not much( which was true. For some reason whenever people talk to me or watch me while I'm MDing I either slow down or miss targets). They watched me for about 5 more minutes and then it happened. One of the girls got the bright idea that if they reopened the plugs I had dug and tore them apart they would magically find money. At first I didn't realise they were doing this, but then I glanced over after I heard some grass being torn and immediately told them to not do that. To late, the damage had been done. :sadwalk: I recovered, the best I could, the holes that I was near that had been damaged. There were 2 others that where about 10 ft. away that I planned on covering when I got closer to them. They weren't torn up as bad as the other ones were, but the plugs were still out of their holes. Anyway, I started getting good signals in a different direction, so I followed the signals, telling myself that I'd recover them on the way back to the truck. Well, I completely forgot about them.:rage: I don't blame the girls for this because I had plenty of chances myself to cover them but I didn't. Pretty much all my fault. Still though, I just wish that parents would be around during these encounters I've had with children so that I can enjoy my hobby as much as possible and, more importantly, not have to feel like I have to keep an eye on the children.I guess what I'm getting at is that I wish parents would actually take there kids to the park instead of letting an 8 yr. old watch them.( By the way, at one point she ran off crying because no one would listen to her, leaving the 3 yr. olds alone. Because of this, the three year olds walked away and they had to go looking for them.) Sorry for my rant, but this incident ticked me off because of the fact that there was no parental supervision. Even when parents have been present when I've been MDing and see their children swarming me, they act like I'm supposed to babysit them while they sit back and relax. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy messing around with younger children, but when they swarm me I have to focus partially on them.

Anyway, on to the bright side of the day.( Or the last month or so) I haven't really posted our finds for the last few weeks so here they are. Figured I'd put them all in 1 big post. The 1st pic is of all the quarters, dimes, and nickels( uncleaned) that we've found over the last few weeks. The 2nd photo is of all the pennies that aren't to badly corroded. The 3rd photo is of all the cars.

The 4th photo is of the 5 wheaties( 1952-D,1957-D, 1955-D, 1918, and 19??), the 1958 Rosie:biggrin:, and the .800 silver utensil:please: that were found at yesterdays park. Unfortunately, I had no luck. Anyone know what type of utensil it is?? And finally, the 5th photo is a closeup on the top of the mystery utensil.

When I was a very small child, back in early 1950s, we had a similar implement as part of an eating set for infants. They were made of silver and there was a spoon and pusher. I think you might have found a "pusher", as we called them. A child could use it to push food onto his/her spoon, instead of having to try to handle a fork and stab his/her self.

It sure looks like silver.

Nice collection.

wow that food pusher is a great find :hot: it may be quite old, 800 silver is from Europe does it have any other hall marks on it if so you may be able to find out which country it was made in.

Great finds in those hunts.
I try to detect in the area where children hang out in off hours when they won't be there.
Saturday morning and Sunday mornings are the best as they tend to stay in the house to sleep in or watch cartoons.

Nice pile of loot there. Really like your pictures.
Have little kids come by while I am detecting
sometimes too. There are two things that I do
that work for me the majority of the time.
First I start detecting far, far away from where
they are. Usually they don't want to walk out
as far as I am just to see what I am doing.
If they do I move even further out.
Secondly I start hunting very, very slow. Not
digging anything while thay are watching even
if I get a signal. I will have to go back over that
patch of ground later. Most times the combination
of moving far away and hunting slow does the trick.
The little kids I see soon lose interest in what I am
doing if I appear to be just waving my detector at the
ground and not digging anything. Works for me.
Good hunting to you ! Gene

With my earphones on I pretend I can't hear them rattling away with a thousand questions. They lose interest fast.

Like Joel I hunt parks and tot lots very early in the morning or on a day when it's sputtering rain and hardly no one is there. Love all your loot though, looks like you had a very productive day none the less! Good for you!:garrett:
